The Color of Violence III:
Stopping the War
On Women of Color
March 11-13, 2005
New Orleans

CALL FOR PRESENTERS AND WORKSHOPS

Incite!: Women of Color Against Violence is a national activist organization of radical feminists of color advancing a movement to end violence against women of color and their communities through direct action, critical dialogue and grassroots organizing. By supporting grassroots organizing, we intend to advance a national movement to nurture the health and well-being of communities of color. Through the efforts of Incite!, women of color and our communities will move closer towards global peace, justice and liberation.

At Incite’s second conference Color of Violence II: Building a Movement held in Chicago in Spring 2002, over two thousand people gathered to strategize around the connections between sexual/domestic and state violence, racism and colonialism in the lives of women of color. Located in the historic black Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans, the Color of Violence III will build on Incite’s earlier work. The conference will focus on local organizing as well as making international connections to build a global movement to end the war on women of color in all its forms.

We invite proposals for presenters or workshops that develop analysis or strategies for combating all forms of violence against women of color.
Informational workshops/presentations, skills-building workshops, artistic presentations, and workshops using other creative formats are all welcome.

We particularly welcome workshops/presentations that focus on strategies for building grassroots political mobilization rather than simply social service delivery. We also welcome presentations by working class and poor women and where women speak on their own behalf, rather than being spoken for by advocates.

Areas of interest include but are not limited to:

Organizing against violence in communities of color
Base building and grassroots organizing
Organizing across borders
Skills-building workshops – fundraising, public speaking, working with
media, local organizing, research, etc.
Imperialism and U.S. occupations
Militarism
Violence and the global economy
Immigration detention, border violence and xenophobia
Prisons and the violence of law enforcement
Police brutality
Sterilization abuse, dangerous contraceptives and attacks on the
reproductive rights of women of color
Heterosexism and homophobic violence
Gender policing and transphobic violence
Violence in the media
Women of color-centered approaches to challenge domestic violence and sexual
assault
Developing alternatives to incarceration for addressing violence
Violence in faith communities
Violence against refugee women

Violence against girls of color; girls in the care system
Mobilizing youth against violence; addressing the criminalization of youth

OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE LEADERSHIP OF WOMEN OF COLOR, WE RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THAT ONLY THOSE WHO IDENTIFY AS WOMEN OF COLOR ON AN EVERYDAY BASIS SUBMIT PROPOSALS.

Each year we receive many more proposals than we have space for as well as multiple proposals on similar issues. It is therefore possible that we will reorganize proposed panels and/or ask speakers to join a different panel. We invite you to support the organizing committee by being as flexible as possible.

Proposals should be no more than one page in length and do not need to
conform to any particular format. Proposals must be postmarked by August 15, 2004. Please include biographical information on all presenters so that we can ensure equitable representation of speakers on the basis of race/ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, degree of physical ability, and age.

Since we have limited funds, we cannot guarantee funding for travel and
accommodation for presenters.

Send proposals to:
