Urban Dictionary Definition Of Nappyhead

I got this email from the urban dictionary after someone informed the board about the "definitions" for the words nappy and nappyhead. I recommended one for deletion, and just got the confirmation blah blah blah email from the board.

So I decide to check to see what else is there: you have your usual--unkempt, messy, ghetto hair... :rolling

so i check nappyhead. the ONLY definition they have is :d) :

a n*gger.
This blatant racism is atrocious. What amazes me (or does it? ) is that the definition was posted in Aug. 2003...it's been there too long.

:lol is this even a 'real' dictionary like merriam-webster? If it ain't, then how can you have something like that deleted? It's an 'urban' dictionary which probably means that it consist of a bunch of slang terms like 'paper' and 'cheddar' (meaning money) and that changes all the time. I am not offended or worried until this becomes a part of the 'regular' overall dictionaries.

and 'nappy' has had that meaning of thick, unkept, unmanageable, unsuitable hair for so long (honestly yall how many of you thought that before you accept the the term? :smug) that it might take a bit for people to pick up that it means 'natural hair.' Even people with natural hair don't wanna use the term 'nappy' for it's very long past history of meaning messed-up hair.

it's a "dictionary" comprised of people's submissions. next to every entry there is a hyperlink for you to recommend for deletion.

it's easier to do that than to vote for defs. it seems.

Okay, I offered this definition -
An African or African American or anyone of African descent who wears that hair natural and has one of the many textures of woolly-like (nappy) hair.

Example: I have since become a 'nappyhead' because I decided to stop relaxing and using chemicals and decided to let my 'nappy' hair shine it's all god-given glory.

Category: Hair

I haven't seen where you can delete the other definition yet. Not sure if they will use the other def I offered, but we'll see. Keep us updated :).

I sent a deleteion request as well and marked it of high priority.

I chose the option of hateful and offensive. Anyway here is what I said:

It is both hateful and offensive and has nothing to do with being nappy. it is just a racist excuse to defame people on the internet. A legitimate definition is someone whose hair curls, coils, waves, or kinks naturally in a tight pattern commonly associated with people of african descent or of the african diaspora. This definition applies to those wearing their hair naturally with out any chemical treatment to alter their natural hair texture.

a term used to describe someone (typically of African descent) who possesses tighly coiled, very curly hair.

Though often used as a slur, insult, or indicator of self-loathing the term is often used to express an individual's self-love, individuality, uniqueness and beauty.

Why delete - it is offensive.

Reason: This is blatantly offensive and and nappyhead has never meant 'ni****' it has historically meant 'unkept' and 'messy' African or African American Hair it it's natural state (no perms, relaxers, texurizers, or any type of chemicals). Nappyhead has had no past synonymous history with niggar. Since there is a growing consensus among people of African and African American descent to wear their hair natural and free of any chemicals, the word 'nappy' and 'nappyhead' is now being reclaimed to mean 'natural hair' and one who wears natural hair respectively.

I am thinking this might get moved to the 'Activism' part of the forum, but I don't know.
