right. some hints with henna powder - neutral

mix it with avocado and caster oil, a few drops of rosemary e.o. and a tsp of vit C chrystals. Leave in hair - strengthens and relaxes the curl ( this is Hadas recipe on longhairforums.com. she is a 3c/4a mix and she says it relaxes the curl. I am interested in the strengthening properties.

This other curly., Mahalialee 4, adds the powdered neutral henna to a herbal tea (similiar to the one posted on this board), a bit of brewesters yeast and castor oil. Leave in hair for two hours. She does this twice monthly.

I wish i had known this. I just mixed henna with water and it took me a passel of time to wash the stuff right outa my hair.

Thanks Jazz,
I visit that board from time to time I even registered last night but I missed that post. I am glad you found it.

Why did you have a hard time washing out the henna?

I love the smelll of it. It has such an earthy smell. When my bag is finish I guess I will be my excuse to buy a ticket to Tunisia to get some more. hehehe! I didn't find the others to be as nice as what I am now using.

I never heard of the vitamine C chrystals. but I do know that the ladies there use lemon juice in the henna. I guess I can do that too.

thanks again
I will do this today.

well, the henna i got is from india. I just mixed it with water, and did not wash it out properly, so it stayed in my hair (and i was washing it under the sink). I really should have used some heavy oil (like castor oil or extra virgin olive oil) or made it thicker, but i wanted it to go in my hair, not just stay on like a pack. So, i will try and do my hair in sections before i do this.

Lemon juice, eh??? well, my skin is kinda sensitive, so i will pass on that. I will take a change on the vit C chrystals.

Actually, it is off the subject, but i bought this cleanser for dry skin from Neal's Yard Rememdies in the UK, and it has lemon oil, and the spots on my face have totally cleared.

The only thing that i am worried about though, is that i want to lighten my hair in the summer. I got the idea from one of your inspirational natural headed photos. The one with the golden orange kinda highlights in the front, but i wonder how the highlights will react with the henna.

The possibilities have shifted.

Sooo... that is it from me, then. Sorry that i got my signals crossed on the other part of the board. Still trying to remove foot from mouth.  sigh.

Sorry that i got my signals crossed on the other part of the board. Still trying to remove foot from mouth.  sigh. what are you talking about??? NOt to worry!

That lemon oil you used must have been great. This summer I was traveling with some friends in U.A.E and I met a lady who gave me somethings that are made from dried Lemon Peel and rice and some other ingredients. I used it as a scrub. WELL let me tell you. WOOOO, my skin became sooo amazingly soft and to add to that, I noticed that some of the darkness near my knees got lighter and smoother and it also removed the marks on my foreheard from the bumps I got from using MSM. I did not know that lemon could do such amazing things.

I now try to duplicate what she gave me and I do get some great results on my skin only problem is that it does not smell so great after leaving it out for days. However all my body is sooo refine in texture. There are some amazing natural products out there.

AS for your hair and highlights, I Really don't know but I had a texturizer for years and then I got color and still used packaged henna and I had no problems.

I would love to see your hair when/if you do colour it.

hmmmm, acjazz, have you tried adding grapefruit seed extract to your lemon peel, and rice concotion, when you are grinding it and stuff. The extract is something i discovered from my health store. I know that aveda uses it as a preservative (the main one) in their products - why dont you try it in yours?

I know that lemon/lime juice are like, natural bleaching agents, but i would be careful with it on skin. You can get increased photosensitivity. So... wear sunscreen... LOADS.

I bought mine (grapefruit extract), and will be using it for a preservative for my face creams from now on.

Anyhoos, some info from my henna conditoning experiment.

As you know, i mixed the henna with a herbal infusion similiar to the other one posted on this board - chamomile, hibsicus, comferey, nettle, and rosehips. I added a tbl spoon of arrowroot (ground - you can get it in your baking sections in the supermarket) to thicken the mixture. I put it on my hair. Left it for two hours.

When i washed it out, it was dry, and yeah, like you said, my watch springs were kinda hanging, which was not what i expected. I resigned myself to the fact that i would always have hair growing out and up, as opposed to down. I was even boasting on my relaxed headed brethern that i was kinda cool, y'know? But yeah, i could see my hair having more 'hang' than usual.

The henna did strengthen, but felt a bit dry, not as moist as it could have. So i mixed olive oil with my conditioner (no name brand, just a base from www.naturallythinking.com (UK based site). Left it in for 1/2 hour. Twisted my hair.

Not bad.

The process is a bit time consuming, so i can see why this poster only does it twice a month.

Next week though, i will try the henna mixed with castor oil, rosemary e.o.' and vitamin C crystals. The latter products are supposed to make your hair shiny and your scalp stimulated.

In the week, since i do swim more now, i will try the marshmallow and hibiscus tea (1tsp of each for 1 mug of tea)- to inject some softness and moisture to hair.

For highlights, i think that i will do a test patch somewhere in the middle, so if the results are untenable, it will be no great loss.

Hope that this post helps in someway.

aaahhhh! (screams and giggles!). Sorry!

i am trying to find castor oil in the UK, since my shippment from the US hasn't come as yet (no company, just my relatives in the states doing me a favour).

This is so that i can try the henna with the castor oil.

I did try the 'herb tea' for my hair that i wrote about. It is alright, the rinse, but not necessary moistening. My hubby loves the smell of it though, he says that my hair reminds him of a spring meadow.

Right, then.

thanks for the link, acjazz.

Anyone here using henna to color their hair?

Autumn

Hey Jazzy pom,
i have for the last few months been doing research on henna, i am/was (still debating with myself) gonna do it.
i have seen henna for sale in Body shop in this country, Do you know if that is any good? where did you get yours?
i am scared to use it, i have read on a few henna websites that some times it can react to the conditioners & products that we put in our hair,
i have also heard it is like a protein conditioner, which my hair is not too keen on either (protein in small doses is okay)

U should be able to get your castor oil in any black hair shop, or chemist in the UK.

hey up autum, you would be better off buying LUSh henna than the body shops. Tried both, and no contest. LUSh also has like a henna conditioner ARABIAN BRIGHTS that's kinda nice, but expensive £4.75.

If you want the pure henna, you can buy it at any asian shop (as in a 'proper' asian shop). It comes in the powdered form, and i warn you, it is difficult to wash out, even with the castor oil ( i find) so i only do this ONCE a month.

well, henna strengthens the hair. If you follow it with a moisturizing conditioner (like the superdrug coconut conditioner for dry hair the 475ml for £1.79 that could work)it should work.

you could only do henna conditioning once every six weeks like a protien treatment.

i found some castor oil. Boy i am loving it for my twisties! I want to mix it with some coconut oil and make an inexpensive pomade!

Question asked at the Henna Board by BHG :

ByHisGrace wrote:

I diluted some powdered nuetral henna; a very weak henna solution.

I mixed with a conditoner (suave humectant) that I use as a leavin.

I use as a hair dressing for my daily leave -in.

I rinse my hair daily. I have these together in a pump bottle that i jsut smooth sections of my hair and comb thru.

Is this safe for my hair ?? Can I "over henna" ?

I am just addicted to how good my hair looks and feels just after a henna treatment.

I have put in the henna, a whole pack mixed w/oliveoil last month and left in for an hour....my hair felt so soft and curled so well afterwards.

I also have a Vatika Oil from an Indian Grogery store which contains coconut oil, amla & henna.

Can I over do this henna thing ?? I always use it with conditoner& oil.

Thank You for your help !

As long as you don't use synthetic dyes or straightners with your henna, you should be fine!

Catherine's the coolest....she's so used to get henna hair questions..and one of the best artists there is...

Also I would refrain from using many types of hair products, be a little selective. Because I have found that your hair can react to hair products such as gels and certain leave in treatments, when your using henna.

I hope she helped you out.

thanks for that Ace9
i was a little worried about the products i have used in my hair, & how it would react, i have in the past used way to many hair products, experimenting, i think i have learn that less is more and i am cutting back.

I am scared it will react to the products in my hair.
It funny, you think henna, natural product, no harm, but there are risks. scary

I initially was gonna do the henna for colour, but with research, i discovered the hair health benefits, but now i think i will wait a while until my hair routine is consistent, this is my first winter, full winter, with no relaxer, i am still learning what i need to use, & i am trying to use all natural products, when i get there & stay consistant with that, then i might give henna a try.

all the best

My first henna treatment:

Hair Type: 4a

Products Used:

Rainbow Research's Neutral Henna Powder
Water
Home Health Castor Oil
Nature's Gate Herbal Conditioner
Aubrey Organics GPB*
Olive Oil Cream (Hollywood Beauty)*
Rosemary Oil Mixture*

*Only used a touch

Procedure:

Mixed all ingrients in a plastic bowl to getting a pudding-type texture and allowed to sit for 30 minutes

Applied all of mixture to scalp and hair

Covered with a plastic cap for 2 hours (frst hour under hood dyer - medium setting, second hour no heat)

Rinsed for approximately 10 minutes

Added a large amount of conditioner and rinsed again to ensure all henna was removed

Current Hair State:

A lot less bulky, very soft, slightly frizzy due to me playing with it

General Observations:

My hair started to "clump" nicely while I was putting the henna in my hair. Upon rinsing it was a little stiff, but the 2nd conditioning helped with that. It was still a tad frizzy after rinsing, but less frizzy overall. I didn't shampoo since I used my Sea Buckthorn yesterday, but I will shampoo in the morning before class and report the results later on in the day.

*********************************

Day After Update:

Ok, I shampooed with my Aubrey Organics this morning. Then I followed up with Curl Vive Conditioner and a touch of Nexxus Humectress.

My hair is pretty nice! It still has a little bit of frizz, but not as much as normal. I'm enjoying the lack of bulk, because that's been my biggest problem. I never had problems combing my hair or anything like that. And my texture has never been an issue either. It's just that the longer my hair gets, the more bulky it gets. I HATE that.

My hair looks longer, but the curl pattern doesn't seem like it's been stretched out. I know that it must be, otherwise it'd still look short. It just doesn't look straighter...just less bulky.
