A 3 year old journey

A friend of mine pressed my daughter hair, trying to surprise me. Was not happy. So anyways it must have been pressed too hot because it never reverted back that was October 2008 so her hair have grown out about an inch of natual. Now I want to be able to braid her hair if I do the big chop. So how much longer should I let her natual grow for me to be able to braid it still? It have to be about 3 inches, is that right?
