Ok I've had lots of inquiries about this recipe so here goes ladies. Hope it helps you as much as it has helped me with hair growth. Not all of us are concerned with growth. For those of us who are............................
First get some rosemary tea bags. I brought mine from the health food store.
Also get some Sage oil (this is to help it not go bad)
Now boil some water. (1-2 cups)
Next add the rosemary teabags (abut 3-4)
Let it steep for about an hour. The more the bags steep, the more concentrated your brew
will be. Male sure it is not too concentrated though or you will get the itchies (well at least I did)
Next put your brew in a sprits bottle.
Now add 2-3 drops of sage oil.
Now make sure after usage you keep your concoction refrigerated. If not it will go bad
due to bacteria. Also make sure the bottle you use is sealed shut tightly.
Try to use up all of your tea in about two-three weeks. Anything kept longer than that
may go rancid even while it is being refrigerated.
Good luck. Hope this helps

i made a tonic very similar to this one, i just bought some fresh rosemary and sage, steeped it in a knee hi (i know its ghetto, but i couldn't find any cheese cloth  ) in some spring water, put some EO drops in it (grapefruit is all i had at the time) the smell is VERY pungent, put it in a spritz bottle and go! and i must say i have SERIOUS NEW GROWTH! of course you have to keep it in the frige or it will go bad

How long did it take for you to notice the growth? I made a batch before I left for school this morning, so I'm kind of curious. I didn't have any sage so I had to use straight up rosemary.

I've used rosemary EO and spring water for a spritz and I've used rosemary leaves you get from the store (steeped in boiling water). As for the EO/water spritz, I noticed a major growth spurt over the course of 1 1/2 months...check out my growth comparison in my natural pics section of my site so you can see...this stuff really works wonders! :-)
Of course, everyone's hair growth will be different...I won't say that yours will grow in the same amount of time...but I can say that I noticed a big difference in the rate of growth when I started using the rosemary EO/water spritz (around 2nd half of Jan '03 up to now)...

Good plan. I just got rosemary EO in the mail, like yesterday so I will drop a few drops in my spritz bottle. :D
Do you think using the rosemary seeds instead of leaves for your spritz brew will have the same effect?

Juat PLEASE don't keep that batch for too long. Take it from one who has had experience with rancid rosemary  For me the inicating factor that made me realize that rosemary was really working is when I got my twist extensions. Prior to this hairstyle it took about four0five weeks for me to notice a significant amount of new growth. This time around (I kid you not) it happened in two. Now I know I run the risk of members saying "that's impossible don't believe the hype" but hey, Just testifyin about what happened to me :D

If you bought the oil that doesn't need to be refrigerated. If you buy the tea bags and you make the spritz yourself then yes please refrigerate and add preservatives :)

I took a slightly diffrent approach to the rosemary spritz. I steeped fresh rosemary in distilled water , after cooling I added a few drops of sage and a couple of teaspoons of MSM to the mix.
Ok, i'm young and naive and am a little confused.
Y'all say you steeped rosemary in boiling(or hot) water then add sage oil?
I might have this all wrong but can sage oil(?) mix with rosemary water?

You can most certainly use the EO :D...that's what I'm using and I believe it has the same effect as using the rosemary tea. Plus I think using the EO is much more convenient, since you don't have to refrigerate the spritz after you use it (at least I don't :-)) So hope this helps ya!

The sage oil that I bought wasn't in the form of an oil. It came in a lil dropper and it's liquidy. I got it from the health food store. Good question
I added the glycerin and castor oil because my hair looks frizzy if I don't apply some type of something on it in additon to water. I regularly use castor oil and curl activator that contains a significant amount of glycerin.

Has anyone else noticed a change in hair color since using the Rosemary tea? My hair is turning the color of the tea and I really like it!! :D
I've tried using semi-perm colors similiar to the color of the brewed tea but they didn't take. This summer with the tea and the sun my hair will be a really nice color without the use of any harsh chemicals. I did read somewhere on the net that Rosemary tea can be used to color the hair but that it would take it a long time to do so. Just wondering if anyone else experienced this. Either way it's another good reason for me to keep using this spritz!! :D

It seems to be growing ok I haven't noticed any accelerated growth but that's probably because at first I wasn't using it everyday and lately i've been putting more on my hair than my scalp, hince the haircolor change  But overall i'm very pleased with it because it gives my hair a really nice sheen and helps with curl definition. And of course it's my new natural hair color  Thanks again for this wonderful multi-purpose receipe.

rosemary will darken the hair. I've seen alot of natural recipe's for brunettes online, that contain rosemary to darken. I don't think the rosemary will dramatically affect your new hair color, but you might see slight changes after using it for a while

My hair is currently dark brown and it just makes it look a little lighter with some reddish tones to it. I think you will be ok, because it's a pretty gradual change. It may just cause a very slight change to your color.

I'm lucky that my mum grows rosemary in the garden (a hidden secret until now), and I bought some sage oil yesterday, boy that stuff stinks! I was also going to buy ylang ylang oil but the lady at the counter put some on my hand and it smelt absolutley disgusting! :x So I just bought the sage.
This Rosemary spritz does smell quite bad tho don't it :?
Any way... I washed my hair last night and spritz some on damp hair and all I could say was WOW. My newgrowth felt so nice and soft. I also had a nice sheen which i never had before after washing my hair in twists. A good thing about it is that the smell wears off after a couple of mins and your hair feels soft all day.

Isn't that cool? I can turn back the hands of time with my spritz! :D
And talking about that, I made some more rosemary EO spritz the other day. I did something a little different with my recipe this time...After I mixed the distilled water with my glycerin and rosemary EO, I put about a tablespoon of Suave conditioner in there as well. It thickened up the spritz just a little bit--giving it some body. Adding that bit of conditioner really helped, because I don't care too much for the 'drips' when I spray...since it's a little thicker, it clings better to my 'fro. http://acjazz28.sytes.net/grin.gif Plus I get the conditioning benefits as well when I spritz too. So I broke down and got the sage oil. Had the teabags on hand (I'm a tea junkie, rosemary helps me sleep).
Anyhow, I've been using it 3 days. I love the herby smell. My hair has been so incredibly soft I can't get my hands out of it. Even if it does nothing for my hair growth, I'll keep using it for that. I'm also thinking it will make a great travel spritz/conditioner----travel with teabags and small vial of essential oil---min space to pack and minimal spill risk
Thanks for the recipe!

Great Recipe. I am currently gathering ingredients. You mentioned adding a preservative to the spritz. Is that included in your original recipe? If not what do you use, and how long does the spritz last? Someone said she added vitamin e, if that works as a preservative, how much do I add?

I think you mentioned adding eo instead of the tea bags. How much of the rosemary eo do you add?

Happy:
The sage is what I used as a preservative. Some people use Vitamin E which is WONDERFUL but I didn't wnt to deal with the stickyness.

Hello, again :D Thighslikewhat, I have been using the spritz for a little over a month now. I have a PROBLEM area at the nape of my neck that refuses to grow :!: Years ago, I wore a short cropped style and my stylist always "lined-me" in my "kitchens" Now, it is BEEDEEBEE back there :!: I massage my scalp, oil the area every night, it is soft, but it won't smooth out. It looks like spiders are gathered back there :!:
PLEASE :!: Help a sista out :?

oK sweetie what's the problem? That it won't grow or that it's "beedybeeds" Why would yu want it to smooth out, do you mean it's a different texture from the rest of your hair? Help me out here I'm confused

Thank you soooo much, for responding so quickly :D :!: Well, I want the hair at the nape of my neck to look like the rest of my new growth which is wavy in some areas and curly in others(don't get me wrong, i'm a sista through and through so these waves and curls are trippin me out :!: ) It's just that it is so nappy :!: It looks gross :!: There are lots of empty spaces back there, where I see a few coils.
As u can see, I can's really explain it. Maybe, if those empty spaces were more filled in I wouldn't be so bothered by it.
So, I guess that's my question; how do I fill in those empty spaces :?: Will the rosemary spritz help :?: If not, what will :?:

Thighslikewhat, i forgot something. I did not add sage to my spritz. Could that be a reason why my empty spaces aren't filling in? I should also admit that I'm using rosemary eo instead of teabags. I know that both sage and rosemary promote hair growth. I'll make sure to add the sage when I get home. BTW, the sage I have, is a combo from bath & body works. It's called cedarwood sage. Does that matter?

Hello folks...sorry it took me so long to get back with ya!
Those of you who are not using the tea bags, but the rosemary EO... how many drops of the oil are you adding? Also, how many drops of sage EO are you adding?
I use about 6-8 drops of rosemary EO in my spritzes. The smell will knock you out if you use more! Check out my how-to video on my spritz recipe so you can get a visual of how much I add. I think seeing it for yourself would help you out more than just having me tell you about it...

I have never heard of that stuff from bath and body works. My guess is that it is not pure sage. I got mine from the health food store
Personally I only use sage because I read and heard from the Dietician/naturalist (I don't know, but he's someone who knows his stuff  ) at the food store that it is a godd antibacterial :? . So I throw it in there for that purpose

I have my own jacked up version of the spritz where I use about 15 drops of rosemary EO, 7-10 drops each of lavender, sage, campor and peppermint.
The peppermint seems to mask the smell of everything else. I currently have braids and the spritz makes my head tingle :D . . . and not to mention my whole head smelling like peppermint candy!
*Editing to be more specific . . . (thankfully, someone brought it to my attention). I put a little bit of sweet almond oil in the bottom (about half an inch) and a tad of Infusium 23 (with the purple writing). The spray bottle that I use is about 20-24 ounces (about the size of a cup from the gas station). sorry, I'm still sort of new to this concept of writing out a recipe.

Also, I have a bald spot on the back of ,my hair (it's been about 5 years) and somebody in another natural hair board recommended to massage sweet almond oil mixed with rosemary eo, do you think it can work too with hair growth or is the spritz better?

I used an 8oz bottle of spring water and I put 30 drops :!: of sage e.o. in the spray bottle. It gives my hair a nice tingle!!! Plus, I massage my scalp several times a day after spritzing.

Motowngrl is also one of my original hair idols too. :-)...You're definitely in good hands when you follow her advice. :-)
As for commercial products, I don't use too many of them. I'm a 4a on a budget, and the commercial products I do use are quite simple...like Suave conditioner and Dr Bronner's castile soap. Other than that, I buy simple products as ingredients for my homemade hair grooming like glycerin, coconut oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, EOs (essential oils), distilled water, etc. So far, these are all the things I need to make my naps happy .
As for your b-d-b's, thighs gave you a pretty good answer. Actually, IMO, I see nothing wrong with beedeebees... I see them as tight curls. Sometimes our napptural hair wants to bunch up and be seen like that. It's natural :-). If you want to minimize the b-d-b apperance, you can always brush 'em...but they're not a bad thing.

I had a gigantic bald spot on the crown of my head. Since using the growth spritz since February, I have enough growth to get individual braids. I got my hair braided yesterday (Friday) and she was able to braid it and with no excessive hair pulling to grasp the hair. In essence - the growth spritz is a definite lifelong keeper and I tell everyone who has hair issues (including my permed friends ;) ) that this recipe WORKS!

I have just started following this thread as of last night. I am excited to read all of the success with this spritz (Thanks Thighs!)
Well, I have some rosemary tea steeping as I type this. But before I ran upstairs to check my stash of herbs for rosemary, I had to do a little search online for the benefits of rosemary in relation to hair. Not that I was skeptical or anything like that, but I wanted to know for sure whether or not the rosemary or the sage was responsible for the hair growth.
Sorry, I don't have the site listed to refer back to, but here is a quote that I copied and pasted for those of you who may feel skeptical or just plain FYI:
Externally, rosemary has been noted to be beneficial to hair by stimulating hair bulbs and preventing premature baldness. Additionally, it is an excellent remedy for dandruff and eczema. A rosemary scalp wash is easily made by making a tea with rosemary leaves and sprigs, letting it cool and then rinsing the scalp.
Can't wait to try it! Thanks again Thighs! :afro:

Hey Rockin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read up on rosemary while I was tryin to help my aunt find something to help her hair grow back naturally. She has a disease that had left her virtually bald in some areas. Then I figured "hey, if this is soppsed to help hair grow for people who have a medical problem, think of what it could do for me!" Then everythin I came acroos in reguard to herbs, listed rosemary as a source for hair growth, so I stuck with it.
Queen yes you can. That's what most of us do (allthough I don't believe the sage tea would be strong enough to keep your sprits from going rancid. That's why I use the oil)

I tried the Rosemary EO and mixed it with water and olive oil (8 drops EO, water in a 4 oz bottle, 1/4 of bottle olive oil), it made my hair soooo soft. I'm currently wearing braids and my braids were softer, shinier, and it laid down any of the "frizzies"

Okay, I'm joining the Rosemary crew. This is what I put in my spritz bottle today.
I added 12 drops of Rosemary essential oil to spring water and added some Aura Elixir to try and kill the smell, but alas, the smell still lingers.
Has anyone gotten any negative comments regarding the smell? I remember one time I hugged a woman with hip-length locs and she smelled..well.. earthy..woodsy. I hope that's not what I smell like.

my Mum has this in the garden also. What I do is boil some water and put a few leaves in and make it steep for about 1-2 hours. When its cooled I then add the sage oil to it.
I wouldn't reccommend boiling the rosemary b/c it leaves a horrible film on the water. Dependent on how concentrated you want it you can add more or less leaves.
I have made this and put some msm in mine. Some how I think it lasts a lil longer

Thanks.Â* I have so much rosemary growing in the back yard, I can make a ton of this!
What do you do to the rosemary that grows in your yard? Someone told me they have some, but I didn't know what to do with it.
my Mum has this in the garden also.
Thanks!
I will have to try this. I am having trouble finding rosemary oil locally. If this works, that would be wonderful.
It does work trust me. I have already made three batches of this stuff. And I just love the smell. The same thing that is in those tea bags grow from my garden so why wouldn't it work?

I've also decided to jump on the rosemary spritz. I've been using the spritz for about two weeks. I have a huge bald spot in the top and one bald spot on each side of my head. I've noticed since using the spritz that my hair is softer :P , stays moisturized, itch less, and it may be my imagination...but the bald spot in the top is beginning to sprout  The ingredients in my spritz are rosemary, burdock, nettle, lavender eo, glycerine, and water. Thank you ladies for the endless tips and info that allows us to be success in maintainin our naptural hair..

i used tea as a rinse (wild raspberry) and found that it made my afro... *appear* larger. i don't know about making the hair *grow* faster but using tea stretches out my fro a lot. it is good if you don't like shrinkage. i like shrinkage more right now... i don't think i'll be trying the rosemary mixture...

Lakinkyfemm
lol...I wouldn't want to smell woodsy either! :nohuh:
You definitely want to cut down on the rosemary EO. I haven't been able to find the tea bags yet, so I also use the rosemary EO. I only use about 4 drops of rosemary, 1 tbsp. jojoba, 4 drops sage oil, and 1 cup water. It works for me...I definitely can tell the difference in my hair. I use it at night, and by the morning the smell is gone.

ALL HAIL THE MARVELOUS 'ROSEMARY'.... :D
I'm am soooooo serious. When I first started out on my natural journey...I was the product junkie for sure...then I became the ALL NATURAL product junkie...
...then I started doing some research of my own...and I too found out about the wonderful effects of rosemary on the hair for growing hair (especially good for thinning areas)...WELL
I just took off from there...started to make my own products (a hair butter that I swear by and an oil for the scalp...also skin products as well...there is more to come from this... :pumpheart: )...and I made an oil for growth and maintenance...main ingredient is rosemary...
...within the first four weeks of using this my hair grew a bit more than an inch (like an inch and a half...check out my late summer pics from 2002 - September 2002)
...my hair was growing very well for sure...but I stopped using the mixture every night like I WAS doing and started only using it once a week...still acheiving growth (like 1/2 an inch to 3/4 an inch on a good healthy diet month... :D )
...now mind you the 'text book' natural measurement of hair growth for everyone is between 1/8 of an inch - 1/2 an inch tops...!!!! So after realizing that yes...I want that huge growth spurt that I was experiencing in the beginning...I am right back on track with my nightly oiling of the scalp...LOL,LOL,LOL....not only that...after a friendly suggestion...and a class in small business management
I am now manufacturing my signature "RECOVERY" oil (along with some other natural products for the hair and skin) for the public market to be available soon in a natural store near you...HOLLA!!!

I just thought of something. If the rosemary spritz will go bad if you leave it out, isnt it going to go bad sitting in our hair?
nubian indigo
06-18-2003, 09:20 PM
The Spritz should not go bad in your head because it has hit it's intended target...a living and breathing area (the scalp) and will be absorbed into it...not sit on top of it.
...that's how it works...what makes it go bad is the introduction of 'water' to the mix. That is the reason for keeping it in the fridge as to preserve it...
...anytime a mixture contains water it must have a strong preservative to keep the product stable if it is meant to be kept for a long time...so don't make TONS of it...but just enough for a week or two and do keep it in the fridge...it will also be a most refreshing 'tonic' once the good 'ole summer days finally arrive... :D

Yes Rosemary is an excellent ingredient for cleansing the skin...especially persons with oily type or acne prone skin...
...it's great at reducing inflammation
...cooling down the skin
...controlling flakes, dry patches
...and opening up pores as part of a thorough cleansing....
...it will increase blood circulation which should leave your skin with a healthy 'clean' glow...
...you should however be mindful that with continuous use of rosemary that it will darken the hair, which of course may not be what you want on your face, great for on your head (especially with greys...rosemary has a great reputation for darkening greys with continued use) but if you are a person that bleaches out facial hair this may work against that...but that would take some time so use sparingly if you include this herb in your cleansing regimen...just pace it...

I was reading up on rosemary online, and I found some very interesting info:
External application of various herbal essences is believed to benefit those who suffer hair loss due to alopecia. Among these are cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris), all of which have been used to treat alopecia for more than a century. However, no double-blind studies have been conducted to evaluate the efficacy of these herbs until now.
Hay and researchers recruited 84 people with diagnosed alopecia areata. During the seven-month trial, participants suspended use of topical or oral alopecia medications. Instead, half used a blend of cedarwood (2 drops, 94 mg), lavender (3 drops, 108 mg), rosemary (3 drops, 114 mg) and thyme (2 drops, 88 mg) in a carrier oil mix of jojoba (3 mL) and grapeseed (20 mL). The placebo group used just the carrier oils. Subjects were taught to rub the oil into the bare areas of their scalp for two minutes each evening and then to wrap a warm towel around their head to enhance absorption.
Professional photographs of each patients' scalp were taken at baseline, three and seven months. Changes as seen in the photographs served as the primary outcome measure. Outcomes were also measured by mapping bald patches and measuring severity of alopecia with a four-point scale. Of the 84 patients who entered the trial, only 63 completed it—35 from the active group and 28 from the control group.
Of those receiving active treatment, 44 percent (16 of 35 patients) significantly improved, while 15 percent (6 of 28 patients) using placebo improved. The essential oils had a statistically significant advantage (P = 0.008). The average area of hair regrowth with the essential oils was 104 square cm compared with nearly zero for those using placebo.1

With a strong, fresh, herbal fragrance, rosemary stimulates the mind, increases memory, relieves mental exhaustion and fatigue, improves circulation, & boosts digestion. This oil benefits dandruff & hair growth. Brush onto on wash into dark hair to bring out highlights. Rosemary relieves muscular pain & arthritis. (Avoid during pregnancy or if you have epilepsy or high blood pressure.)

Hi, I read through most of the thread and notice some put vitamin e oil as a preservative. Do you still have to refrigerate it if Vitamin E is added. I'm in college right now and will be traveling this summer and want to thicken the my temple hair, so I won't have a frig. always available.
So will vitamin E help preserve it w./o frigeration?
Also can one use this on their skin?

If you use the tea bags then you still have to put it in the frige. Make it with the Oil and you wont have that problem.

Okay so I made a mixture of 10 drops of rosemary oil, a little more than a tablespoon of jojoba oil, I added 1/8 teaspoon of vitamin E.
How much water should I add?
Do I need more vitamin E too?

My rosemary eo came with a recipe on the side that I like to use to massage my temples with. It consists of 1 tbsp. jojoba oil, 5 drops rosemary oil, and 5 drops lavendar oil. It's an option for those that don't want to have to spray from a spray bottle.

06-24-2003, 09:37 PM
for those using the rosemary eo with water, do you just shake up the bottle to mix the oil and water before spraying.
I added jojoba oil, olive oil and vitamin E to the mixture, will shaking it up and spraying it on the scalp have the same effect as the tea, sage and water?

yes...just remember to shake at every use b/c it will separate since oil and water do not mix.

thanks thighslikewhat.
I love the smell of the romemary, expecially since spring is coming, it smells so fresh. I can feel my scalp tingle alittle ( but not where I need hair to grow  )
But i going to use it in the morning and night. My mom w/her permed hair wants to use it too. :)
Does anyone put IC aloe vera gel on top of it, I know some mix pure glcyerin, but will it not absorb well if I put the gel on top of the water mixture?
Should I wait a couple of minutes?

I have a question, if you made the spritz and had some leftover, if you froze the leftover spritz, would it still go rancid?

Hey Nappyheadgyrl, I don't think it will go rancid but if you dont put the ice cubes in a ziploc baggy it will eventally evaporate.

Okay...I will ask again. I have been using Rosemary and Jojoba in the essential oil form on my locs. I rub together and apply directly on my scalp and hair. I was wondering if I might be over doing it?????
Should I be using water????

No actually most aromatherapist would reccomend you dilute essential oils in oils.

Question mitea? Are you adding essential oils to water or making a "tea" with rosemary herb? If you mix oil and water without a preservative bacteria and/or fungi will start to grow in it. So even though you are only adding drops of essential oil to water you are still giving the microorganisms a chance to grow if you dont add a preservative. Vitamin e is a natural anti-oxidant , which keeps oils from breaking down -- in other words from going rancid. When microorgs grow in things this is not something going rancid. Oils/fats go rancid. Microorganisms are not growing in the oil, the oil is simply breaking down, which most oils do eventually. It's a completely natural and eventual process. Most body products which contain oil contain preservatives to slow down the process of the oils going rancid. Lotions which are a mix of oil and water contain preservatives to both combat rancidity as well as the growth of microorganisms. Vitamin e will only keep the oils from going rancid (breaking down) they will not keep bacteria and fungi from growing in the water which happens if it is kept unregfrigerated. You need an anti microbial preservative in order to keep things from growing in the spray. However you more than likely will not need soemthing to keep the oils from going rancid as this can take several months to a year depending on the type of oil. Grapefruit seed extract can be used as an antimicrobial preservative. You can get this at www.fromnaturewithlove.com

one question: is there any other "preservative" than vitamin e that one could use? I don't have any, but if i do not use water, can olive oil, or jojoba oil serve as the preservative? just wondering!
thanks for this wonderful recipe!!!

Well if you keep it refrigerated then you wont have to use a preservative. It will last about two or three weeks in the refrigerator. I'm not sure how long it would last unrefrigerated. Maybe a couple of days. But you should keep it refrigerated just to be safe, bcs the Summer heat will reduce the time it can be left unrefrigerated without spoilage. Heat allows microorgs to grow. If it all of a sudden becomes cloudier then it was before or if you see floating clumps of white stuff then bacteria has started to grow in it.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
You STILL need a preservative even if it is being refrigerated. (Unles you make new tea every other day or so) Bacteria will still settle in even if you keep it refrigerated. The difference will be in the time it takes. Take it from someone who knows first hand.

I agree with 'thighs'.
I made the tea with rosemary leaves and added vitamin e oil :nohuh: . Smelled great... head felt great.... kept it in the fridge. Beginning week two I had some white goopy addition (yuck). It must be dumped... I will try again with a perservative or try using rosemary eo.

I Just started my rosemary oil treck. I could not find the teabags ANYWHERE so i had to end up going to whole foods and buying loose rosemary and just using a steeper :) Works like a charm. I use 2 drops of rosemary eo added to it, i use 6 drops of sage, and 1 drop of eucalyptus (helps with my sinuses). :) I'm ready to see how it works out! I just got freestyle braids so i will be able to chart the progress accurately :)

I guess that could also depend on how cold your fridge is though. I've never seen any signs of bacterial growth after only a few days. We seem to all be basing our opinions on our own experiences.

maybe mine would have lasted longer without the Vitamin e oil. perhaps I will try it straight and see what I get if I cannot find some sage oil rapidly.
all I l know is that mine has a hefty white growth after one week and it has been in the fridge the whole time. it even seemed to ice over on the top a bit... unless that was the beginning stages of bacterial growth.
either way... it did seem to darken my hair a bit.

You might want to try a little glycerin. It has preservative properties. Glycerin at a 25% ratio to 75% water (or other perishable liquid) has short term preservative properties (at least a few months). For a stable preservative you might need to use at least 60-75% glycerin to 25-40 %water. (from Earthly Bodies and Heavenly Hair by Dina Falconi)
I know most people here use glycerin, or can easily get there hands on it, so I thought this info might help.

Maybe you can use the rosemary EO and make up a batch every day?
I have a 2 oz. spray bottle that I use to mix up the rosemary EO and the distilled water. It takes all of 30 seconds to make. The 2 oz. bottle lasts me 2 days (only one if I completely douse my hair), so it's gone before the bacteria has a chance to build up.

Kunda, I don't refridgerate my spritz and this is the recipe I use (thanks acjazz ;)):
- Rosemary essential oil (12 drops)
- Water
- Vitamin-e oil (3 drops) as preservative
- 8 oz spray bottle
Add the Rosemary drops and vitamin-e, then fill the bottle up with water. Shake before use, each time.

I just wanted to add that this stuff works. I wasn't "sold" on the idea at first but decided to give it a real try after a friend said it worked for her. I am now a believer. After three weeks of use, I noticed a growth spurt along my hairline in the front and the sides. I have way more hair there than I did before. The fine hairs in those areas have grown much longer. My hair looks much fuller. I will be getting my hair blow-dried next week for the first time since I started using it, so if I will be able to see if the spray made other parts of my hair longer as well. It's hard to tell when I have 75%-plus shrinkage. My hair hasn't been blow-dried in two months.
My "kitchen" (nape) is looking busier with growth and I am noticing that the hair in the middle of my head is getting even thicker. All of this activity was noticeable in three weeks to a months' time.
I brew fresh rosemary, along with rosemary tea bags and I add the rosemary EO to the concoction when done, along with some drops of lavender oil. I like it really concentrated. It lasts two weeks or so refrigerated. I also use the stuff as a rinse sometimes instead of spritzing. I like the smell of rosemary and the rosemary stuff feels good because it's nice and cold on my scalp. I live in a hot climate and it can be refreshing to cool down with a nice rosemary rinse. I also use it before I go to the gym. It's a boost for me. Not sure why lol. Plus, who knows, maybe there are added growth benefits to using rosemary, which stimulates circulation, in addition to exercising, which also stimulates circulation. :D I'll holler if I see more growth. Thanks for reading.

Although you don't have to, apparently massaging the scalp increases blood circulation which is supposed to have a positive effect on hair growth. I've started massaging my scalp for about 2 minutes after spritzing my Rosemary mix on every night.

I'm so glad I found this site and these posts. I have a question for thighs and anyone else who might be able to answer. I went out last night to buy everything that I need to make the spritz and I can't wait to use it. However, I happened to mention to the clerk that I was using the oils for my scalp and she mentioned using a base such as jojoba oil. I was just wondering if a base or something to that effect was necessary since everything is being diluted. Thanks in advance for your replies.

You're right...since everything's being diluted, you don't have to have a base...however, I put jojoba oil in my spritz for the softness factor...it really makes my hair very soft. So a lil' bit won't hurt! :rainfro:

For this recipe, you need sage eo and either rosemary tea bags or the loose rosemary leaves (not rosemary eo). I use 1/4 cup of loose herbs for 2 cups of water. The sage essential oil will help your mixture to last longer... it's an antioxidant, not a preservative. It's also good for your hair.

I'll give you my opinion on this...I've used dried rosemary and the EO...and I like the EO better because you don't have to jump through all those hoops to prepare the spritz...just add a few drops to your water/oil/conditioner mix, shake it up and that's it! :afro:. I've been using my version of the spritz since January of this year and I've got great results from it...without refrigeration. I use it at least twice a day, or whenever I get the notion to fix my hair in a different style, or when it feels a little dry, or before I go to work, etc...as you can see, I find excuses to use it!
At first I used distilled water for my spritz...but in the past few months I got lazy and started to use regular ole tap water. My growth hasn't missed a beat since.
So if anyone is thinking about trying the spritz and want the easiest way to go about making it, using the rosemary EO is the best choice IMHO...
...and for those of us who are too lazy to read the whole thread ...here's a link to my post on my growth comparison using the spritz...just scroll down and you'll see the pics...enjoy! :afro:

Yes. You can add this. Just make sure you don't overdo on the essential oils. Approx. 8 - 10 drops total eo's per ounce of carrier is fine.
For example: 1 ounce of jojoba oil (the carrier), plus 4 or 5 drops of rosemary eo and 4 or 5 drops of ylang ylang eo. The eo's don't have to be in equal amounts... blend them any way you want to get the scent you like.. just as long as you don't go over 10 drops per ounce.
I think I'll try a rosemary/ylang ylang blend tonite. If I like it, I may scent one of my soaps with it.

I have been using Rosemary & Jojoba oil and just purchased Ylang Ylang. I reall like the smell and am wondering if it would be a good idea to add to my mix??
Yes. You can add this. Just make sure you don't overdo on the essential oils. Approx. 8 - 10 drops total eo's per ounce of carrier is fine.

Thank you very much :) Oh I forgot to say I would be using this in my spritz bottle

I'm a little cornfused... if i used almond oil and jojoba oil mixed with the rosemary eo and the sage eo do I still add water to the mix? <_<
I have dandruff with my braids and all the braid sheen sprays are rubbish. They all seem to build up on my scalp  so I'd like to try the rosemary and sage mix.
Also can my mens (my son and DH) use it on their twa's?

You can if you want to. Each person makes up their spritz however they want to. Some use just water and a few drops of essential oils, some use carrier oils with a few drops of essential oils, some use carrier oils and water with a few drops of essential oils. Your spritz is individual to you. You can make it up however you want it. I have 3 different concoctions at the moment. Not all of them have water added to them. I just use whichever one I feel like using at the moment.

Anyone can use a spritz. Hair care products are not gender specific. As long as the guys like the scent you create with the essential oils, it's fine.

Thanks Diamonique. I'll add the water to the mix.
BTW, I checked out your albums and your hair has really grown tremendously in 3 years. It looks georgeous. Makes me wanna get me some Sisterlocks after I'm done transitioning. :rainfro: :rainfro:

Hello ladies,
So far it has been 5 weeks since I started spritzing my hair with the rosemary spritz, and I am seeing some results :D Especially on my edges...
Interestingly enough, the first spritz bottle that I made was from:
3 Rosemary teabags
1 Sage teabag,
jojoba & Vitamin E oil
Water
In a span of 5-6 days some white stuff was floating in it (although I kept it refrigerated), so I tossed it out. Then I went to Whole Foods on 7th Avenue, and got some:
Fresh rosemary (steeped in boiled water for 40 min.)
Rosemary EO (10 drops)
Sage EO (12 drops)
Water (2 cups initially, but let it reduce to 1 1/2 cup)
This bottle is now on it's 4th week, and no white stuff, or funny smell has developed. I'm not sure why this bottle is lasting much longer than the first, maybe because it's a dark, glass bottle, as opposed to the first one which was a plastic, transparent bottle?
Thanks again for this thread Thighs!
The only drawback, that I've gotten from this spritz is that my scalp itches like mad  , but it's all good because my thin spots are filling in slowly but surely.

Qu for Thighs, Ac, AKAHLF and everyone else that's experienced a growth spurt: Do you guys apply the spritz several times a day? And also, how long after you started using it regularly did you first notice the increased growth? The last question's particularly for AKAHLF since you had a bald spot, which would be easier to monitor.
I've been using the spritz for a month now, my recipe is very simple - 12 drops rosemary eo, a large drop of vit-e oil and 8oz of water. I apply every night before bed, massaging it into my scalp. I know that I've missed about 4 days in all, but I'm yet to see any difference in growth. I'll still be using the spritz if no increased growth happens because I adore the smell and it's good for my scalp. But I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to make the spritz more effective in the growth area. Could it be that the rosemary tea bags are better than the essential oil?

I can't say for sure, but it's possible. Many plants give different benefits from the actual herb than you get from the essential oil.

It WORKS!!!!!!!!
I put some rosemary and sage eo in some olive oil instead of using the tea spritz because I didn't want to wait until my rosemary tea order came in, and I've noticed some significant growth in the past couple of weeks.
I'm still going to try the tea spritz when my tea bags come in.

When I wore kinly twist extensions I used it every night. Now that I don't wear weave anymore I apply when i remember to be quite honest. When I use it consistently and quite often, I notice the best results.
Another thing,
There was a point where I didnt think it was actually doing anything then one day I put my hair in a ponypuff and it was so huuuuuuuge. Then i stopped uing the spritz for a while and noticed a significant decrease in the pace og growth. So sometimes we dont really notice it right off bat.

I'll bet that this bottle lasted longer than the first b/c you used more processed products than fresh ones.

well, i read this thread yesterday & i'm now on the rosemary spritz bandwagon. i purchased the rosemary, sage, & ylang ylang eo from the health food market yesterday. i steeped dried rosemary (i hope that's ok) in h2o for an hr & then mixed it w/acv for my final rinse after i wash my hair today & i mixed 12 oz spring h2o (that's all i had on hand) w/a few drops of the 3 eo & 3 drops of jojoba oil for my spritz.
for those of you that have sisterlocks, i know that we're instructed not to use anything except the starter shampoo, but i couldn't resist the spritz (i was spritzing w/plain h2o anyway). this spritz won't inhibit the locing process will it? :( i like the hebally smell :P

It might.... because it's got oil in it. Go ahead and spritz with water and eo's, but leave out the jojoba oil because it can cause slippage in the early months and hamper your locking process. Oh wait... I just reread your comment about adding the jojoba oil. I'm guessing 3 drops of jojoba oil in 12 oz. of water shouldn't hurt anything. But please don't add more oil. Water is good... oil is bad in the first few months because it softens your hair and retards the tangling/locking process.

After reading about thighs' rosemary concoction on another board, I came here--my first time here, as I'm no kitchen chemist! I'm usually pretty skeptical & have to be convinced thru LOTS of recommendations before I try something new. EIGHT PAGES LATER...gee, I guess I'm convinced! I'm steeping teabags as I type & am following thighs' recipe to the letter, except I'm going to add a few drops of ylang-ylang EO to my mix. I love the smells of everything--nothing's too "woodsy" for me. I'll update in a few weeks.

Does anyone know how much of his spritz should be sprayed on the hair. Do you saturate your hair with it or just mist it? Also do some use this spritz in the morning after you rinse your hair or not?

When you say saturate that would have to mean sprtzing the hair.......... no? I don't spriytz my hair I spritz my scalp. For those of you worried about too m uch mositure in your hair and messing up your do's, you should consider the oil, or do what I do at times: Sprits after you wash so that way it soesn't matter.

Thighslikewhat & Acjazz:
Just wanted to let you know that you have another convert here!
I've been using a rosemary spritz for about 6-8 weeks now. I use rosemary eo, vitamin E oil, IC Fantasia leave-in, and water. (I'm still searching for a better leave-in conditioner, but for now it's what I have so it's what I use.) I also color my hair to cover the gray.
I have noticed that within 3 weeks, the gray will have grown out again, but this past three weeks I noticed that there doesn't seem to be as much gray. So I think the rosemary is coloring it.
I use the spritz at night before tying on my satin scarf and in the morning to refresh it. Also, mornings I use QP Elasta Power Drops for shine (I have been using this for about 2-3 weeks). I am currently wearing my hair in twists, and I noticed that it feels much softer than when I first started. I always massage the spritz in.
I am hooked. I wouldn't dream of being without my rosemary spritz. I don't refrigerate my spritz and have had no problems with spoilage or rancidity.
Since I never did mention that I thought I would try it, I figured I could let you know of my progress, and thank you for the tip on the rosemary spritz. It's appreciated.
:rainfro:
I'm experiencing a problem posting. I hope there are not multiple posts of this message. If there are, my apologies.
Forgot to add that I have jojoba oil in the spritz, too.
