Default Anybody thinking of cutting their locs?

I've had my locs for about 4 or 5 years now and they're at the middle of my back. I never thought I'd have locs for the rest of my life as I couldn't picture getting old with them(I'll be 41 this year). This year the length has started to annoy me and I'm starting to get bored with them. So, I told my hubby--who never wanted me to get locs in the first place. His first reaction surprised me. He told me that he had gotten used to my locs and wasn't sure about me cutting them. Then a few weeks later he started asking me when I was going to do it and that it was time. So of course now I'm not so sure. Anyway regardless of what hubby thinks, I guess overall I want a change but I'm worried that I'll miss them and I'll be too lazy to deal with my loose hair which one of the big reasons that I loc'd in the first place. Plus, if I cut them that's it because I don't want to go through the loc journey again. I don't think I or my husband have the patience for it. Have any of you experienced this? I'm just currious to hear about other people's journeys in this area.

Why not just get them cut into a style? Like:

That way you still have the ease of locs without the hassle of loose hair...

My aunt has done this several times... She's had locs over 10 years... She'll grown them down her back and then cut them into a bob... Then she'll grow them back out long... Just a thought...

^^That's what I do. I grow my locks out then cut them when I start getting bored. I just cut about 3 inches off them into a chin-length bob. Because they are not so heavy now they look fuller, have more body.

I agree with the previous posters. I'd trim to a fun sharply angled bob with lots of swing
Live with it a while and if you still feel done with locs you can big chop.

Co sign - I had the urge to cut a few weeks ago, I dealt with it by styling it more often, the second bob is one I plan to do either at 10 years locversary or next year at 8 years.

Mine will be truly midback before my 4th anniversary and already the length is beginning to bother me. Cutting it is definitely on the horizon for me. (Now, I know why some people with long hair choose to cut.)

Please post before/after pics of whatever you decide to do. Good luck!

Here is a really good video by one of my fav you tubers on this topic:

I say if you find you still want to cut them after this then go for it. But do it for YOU not anyone else.

Also don't forget, you can retain some of your hair by taking down your locs if short hair is a concern. However, if cut your hair to a nice short cut or twa you will have get up and go hair and won't have to worry about "dealing with" loose hair, not immediately anyway

To the OP: Been there, cut that! - 2007, and less than a month, I braided my hair back and began to lock.

Wow, I just logged into NP for the first time in a few years cause this week I have been debating breaking up with my locs. I'll be at 7 yrs this Dec. I'll be 40 in Nov and am considering going back to loose hair since I have found a capable salon in my area. I might not have locd when I did if I wasn't tired of doing my own hair, which was a lot of hair. That curly bob is super cute though. Might try that first and see how I feel then.

Yup! Cut! Yes! Freedom. I went with a chin-lengthed bob. I do not miss that hair...I thought I would. Wash day isnt a pain again and my hair air dries in a few hours again (instead of days later).

This was AFTER I trimmed off the braids at year 4, mind you i cut (now) at year 7. it just was not 'cute' to me-on me- anymore, and it was a lot of work.

I have been Sisterlock'd since 2001 cut them the first time in 2008 when they were waist length; just cut them again last Friday, they were again at waist length. I had 6" cut off so they are now bra strap length. Even thinking about a bob. You can call yourself Old if is you want to but I am not ...I am 50 yrs young and could pass for 40.

Wow, this post came right on time! All evening i've been contemplating whether or not I should cut my locs in a bob for some of the same reasons mentioned above (i.e. weight, boredom, need a change)....then I see a pic of Knotty with her lovely bob and i'm thinking is this a sign? LOL! (You're looking so lovely Knotty and I love the bob! )

See, that's what happens when you don't know what to do with your locs. You blog about it and go on NP. Either way you will get an answer :-) I have one more video to make of my newly combined locs and then maybe i'll cut them.....maybe. I still need to think about it.

    Your hair's looking good KA.

Having it out there that shorter locs are a viable long term option, is a good thing.
