@Cerendipity - I have tried SOOOO many times to do that olive oil and honey mixture over the years and it never comes out right for me. The honey and oil just won't mix together so it's like 2 separate things being put on my head at the same time. My hair never really felt all that afterwards, but I suspect my hair doesn't like olive oil (or honey). Can you tell me how to get the 2 to mix together and I'll try it again :-) What's the trick?
Warm it up in a bowl , take some hot water , then sit the bowl with the honey and olive oil in there after awhile from the heat it starts to mix automatically , just stir it until you think its good.
Did you get a filter?

I just moved to a much drier climate with "different" water. I was told the water isn't hard but when I was doing my hair today it definately had a chlorine smell to it.
Today I tried a banana DC but for some reason I wasn't thinking when I mixed it up and so did combined the following: 1T Seabuckthorn Berry Oil, 1T Rosehip Oil, blended ripe bananas and baby food bananas (that stuff SO shouldn't be pink), and greek yogurt. Now the reason I have greek yogurt to begin with is it's high protein content so wasn't really thinking about the fact that I shouldn't be using it. I realized my folly a little to late.
I shampooed with Aveda Sap Moss and then followed that up with an ACV rinse. I then put my mixture on my head & covered with a shower cap. When I took that cap off, my hair was just like it is when I henna. I also hadn't detangled before hand cause usually I don't have to when I moisturize.... yeah... so trying to detangle with a protein treatment on the hair doesn't work so well. So I put my hair into as many 2 strand twists (bantu knots for the short areas) as I could and then rinsed out the banana DC with warm water, cold water, ACV, and then cold water again.
Note to self, when my 4a pen spring curls disappear, do a protein treatment and they'll be fierce. So had I knot put my hair into the improvised twists/bantu knots I'm pretty certain I would have just shaved it off. I undid each a section one by one and put in smaller 2 strand twists. Yeah it took 5 hours, yeah some of them are Medusa looking, & yeah I used a full 1 once bottle of yangu oil to do so.
My hair is still hard :-( the curls are a little too nicely defined (any other time I'd be estatic) so all I can think of is the tangled mess when I take these out in a week. I really need to soften this hair up and I'm at a loss. Most of my homemade products have humecants in them and can't be used here.

i only read part of your post (i had to stop i wanted to scream) and i can tell you one thing you are putting way to much stuff on you hair. get you a good clarifying shampoo and wash all that stuff out your hair. get a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. it doesn't have to be expensive or a big brand name. then you need to oil your scalp you will have to find the oil that works best for you but i will suggest a mix of sesame, coconut and mustard oil. while your trying to find that just use some olive oil. oil your scalp as need the oil will replace your natural oil and help to condition your scalp so it can make it own oil. now for the ends you can get some shea butter and whip that with aloe vera gel/juice either one you can get and as your styling your hair put it on your finger and hand so it can get one your hair strands lightly not heavy.
please know the avc is a clarifier it remove the oil form your hair and scalp, henna is a protein which make your hair strong and feel hard so be careful of how you mix all those things up
i do hope this help you if

@Moe, I didn't do all that at one time... that was just the list of things I had tried at the time. Back home in VA, the stuff that worked for me in 90-100% humidity is not working for me here in western NY with 50-60% humidity. My hair hasn't like ACV up here nor does it seem to like coconut oil up here either. My Vatica oil isn't working the way it used to, I suspect it can only be used at night & with a cover.
My last Henna treatment was in August and I'm do for one this month. I'm worried though cause I still haven't found anything to counter the dryness up here. I may en up doing the Henna treatment when I go home where atleast I know my moisturizing treatment's will work.
My scalp oil and my hair oil in general are different as my scalp oil tends to have EO's and is something that can penetrate the layers of skin (Emu, Eucalyptus, Nialoi, etc).
UPDATE
My solution was to do my treatments at home as nothing I tried worked. I went home 2 times last month and just this past weekend. And it did wonders for my hair, it's much softer than it was before and I was able to try moisturizing treatments at home. What I've done, sadly won't last until I go home in a couple weeks so I'm still trying to find something else. Will try Cerendipity's way of combining EVOO and Honey. Will hopefully find out what I did wrong with my AG rhassoul issue & try that again. Going to try making a spritz from the herbs I have and distilled water. Going to try to figure out a way to style the hair in a protective style that I can do that looks decent instead of my usual wash-n-go/TWA. I'm also going to to systematically try all the oils and butters I have on different patches of hair to see if I can figure out which ones will work for me up here.

I live in a dry climate also.
I mix together olive oil, shea butter, a few drops of rosemary essential oil and mane n tail leave in conditioner.
I start with 1/2-1 c evoo
2 large tbs pure shea butter
6-10 drops of rosemary essential oil (depends on how much I'm mixing up)
and enough mane n tail to make it a yellow creamy consistency.
When I first started doing this, I didn't think to add the mane n tail, until I found a recipe online to that enhanced the mane n tail and thought just to add it my mixture.
This keeps my hair very moisturized and soft. I have extremely dry hair and completely understand what you are going through. My hair would drink up everything that I put in it until I started doing some research and playing around with the mixtures. I'm glad I did, or I'd have turned into a product junkie for sure lol.

what have you done about the water? I would think that is the source of your problem.

I'm planning on picking up some Distilled water tonight and trying to make a herbal spritz. I"m going to do my quarterly Henna next week when I go home so I'm trying to get it as moisturized as possible before then.

I use Aubrey Organics conditioners mixed with honey and oil as a pre-poo treatment. The mixture is thicker and easier to apply

Kpangnan Butter works surprisingly well, especially for a night set style. I put it in last night after my co-wash while my hair was still damp. Woke up this morning with what I call my JBCO set but a touchable one. My hair is super super tightly coiled on my head but I can also fluff it and it puff's out nicely. When I stretch out my hair it coils back up to the fluffed position and it's so nicely moisturized. It's hard (well my room is cold) but melts in my hand so I'm sure I could whip it like shea butter with the addition of a light oil.
