Default Not The Reaction I Was Expecting

I got my locs started on Saturday (3/2) by having a loctitian interlock my hair.

I absolutely love it! It is exactly what I wanted, and I do not regret my decision for one minute.

I am just shocked by how much negative feedback I have received at work and in my personal life. My best friend said she loved it. Everyone else, my boyfriend, mom, co-workers who have brought it up, etc, does not like it. They said it looks bad and I need to just wash it out (they don't understand the interlocking process...). These are all people that I discussed my decision to loc with for months, so everyone knew I was getting it done. Additionally all of these people have seen me with mini braids and mini twists, so this style shouldn't be too different... They all said it does not look right on me though. Oh well! I'm keeping it!!

Anyone else dealt with this? Did people eventually just shut up and keep their opinions to themselves? lol

Good for you for keeping them in. Two things could be at play: they don't like locks or they have an expectation of what locks look like (my guess the neat, freshly redone, possibly braided out type). Your BF is probably just struggling with the permanent change and can't see what it will look like when they locks finally mature.

Personally I did not have to deal with this, even during the fuzzy phase but more then likely, they kept it for themselves.

Enjoy your hair. I've learned a long time ago not to listen to others, especially if I feel strongly about something.

I think your new locs are very nice. If you like it, then they'll get over it. If they said they don't like it, I'd respond with "I love it! *huge smile*" If they said I need to wash it out, I'd say "No, I don't." Usually when you shut it down, they stop offering their negative opinion. Down the line when you have fully matured locs, they'll be like "Oh, I love your hair." o_O

Thanks everyone! I am definitely going to continue to enjoy my hair and not worry about everyone else. I just found people's reactions so puzzling. My daughter loves it, so at least I have her on my side. She asked me to braid her hair like mine (she's 3 so the easiest I way I found to explain it was by saying they are really tiny braids).

Just wanted to cosign everyone else...they look great and eff what everyone else has to say. I've been natural for 7 years now and STILL hear comments. Luckily it's my hair so my opinion is the only one that matters :-)

As long as you are pleased with your hair, this is all that should matter. No one is obliged to like everything about other folks.

It depends on the person. Although my locs are new, I know of someone who has ALWAYS let their negative opinion of my hair be known. And I've been natural for over 10 years.

    I love your attitude though!!
