View Full Version : Just curious, when did you have your first experience with the creamy crack?

I'm just wondering.
I recently found out that my first perm was when I was four years old. D: Apparently it was so long and thick that my mother didn't know what else to do. ;.; Looking at it now, it seems like a myth that it was ever "long" and "thick."

Anyone have an early experience?

I was six going on seven, I think. Or seven going on eight.

I just remember being so distraght, because there was going to be a spice girls party that saturday and I wanted to be Scary Spice.

That wasn't going to happen with my permed hair :-|

Either 3 or 4. I don't remember the experience but the pics say it all. Along with that my mother never knew what to do with my hair lol!We don't have the same texture or anything. All she would do when I was a baby was put cutesy barrettes in it lol! My father would always say when you gonna do my daughter hair b/c she was too scared to do anything with it b/c it was thick and curly.

I was like 8 or 9 when I got my first perm. going into the 6th grade..my mom said she wanted a different look for me..since I was going into middle school, she said I couldn't wear pig tails all mi life. I remember the braids she always put in my hair when I was little. I can imagine that my hair was a pretty good length, bt as I got older..I do know she blow dried my hair. :(

I was 17 when I got my first perm. I use to wear braids. My mom was against any type of chemical and I wasn't mad at her for it when I was growing up. I always use to get compliments on how my hair was so thick and long. I guess I was lucky, thanks mom :)

Hmm. It's kind of interesting on how it's spread out. Not everyone had it from birth or early childhood.

I got mine when I was about 4 or 5. My aunt was the one that put it in my hair and she was surprised that I didn't scream or anything. Yes, it did burn, but I thought my hair would be really straight and like white people's hair if I just left it in longer. I stopped somewhere between last year and this, I don't really remember when. I'm glad I stopped at a younger age than most of the people that I know. :)

my first relaxer was when i was 12 and i regret it soo much.it ruined my hair cuz now when i wet it,it hardly is culry its like afro with straight strands.with that now im trying to go back to natural and jus stick with braids/.weaves./twists.and no more straightening unless its a weave.

13 y/o, my choice

ETA: Even though it was my decision, I started crying half way through and told them to take it out but they said they couldn't since half of it had already started relaxing. When my hair was washed and I saw it I was really upset and screamed "My hair has shrunk!!" LOL. The sadness lasted the whole weekend till I went to school and people complemented the length. I began to enjoy it after that.

I got my first one when I was about three or four but my hair didnt, fall out or anything....it barely took because ,my hair was/is so thick. LOL. I can't remember how it felt but I can remember being like seven or eight and them burning like crazy and not taking not a bit....lol. My relaxers didn't actually start working until I got into the middle school and by then i was fed up with them.

I was about 11. I had never heard of a relaxer and I didn't know what it was. I really hated it, it was like a mild form of torment for me. lol

Like 6 or 7 years, I believe...my mom always says, "It was one of those mild kiddie relaxers..." I'm like, okay mom, if believing that makes you feel better, lol

I was 12, the summer before 7th grade. I wasn't allowed to use heat in my hair so it was the first time I actually saw my true length (I didn't even know I had hair past BSL). Anyway, by the time I got to 8th grade it was all broken off :-/

Middle school, unfortunately. Prior to that my hair was doing just fine with the whole press and curl routine. That's not ideal, but, at least, my hair wasn't fried. It was stuff like gym, going to school across town and just a more intense schedule that made that happen.

Unfortunately, I just wish my mom would have put more time into working with my hair as it was. Like seriously, I'm sure I would have balked and probably done my own hair in at some point, but my hair thrives with a simple routine: co-wash, twist, twist-out, messy fro and do it again. I probably would have learned that a lot quicker without the perm hell I went through.

Age 10. One application. Took all my hair out. Didn't get another perm till I was 23. Permed til 42 or so. Natural now for 8 years. Fortunately, I was old enough to remember my hair prior to my first perm at age 10.

Around 13-ish. Sad part is, I love my natural hair & never knew that relaxing was permanent until about a year ago. I never even gave it much thought growing up until my hair started breaking off. Better late than never I guess. :)

OOo tough one i would have to say maybe 7 or 8, but my mom said i begged her to death and did it to shut me up. Apparently i was tired of getting my hair combed and at that time i know it was down my back.

Wondering if those ladies who were permed at an early age under 10 years were born in the 1980's and 1990's?

At 13 my choice as well, I just wanted to fit in. My hair broke off a lot. It also only grew up pass my collarbone and stayed there. My mom surprisingly tried to talk me out of getting a relaxer!

I had my first perm when I was 5. My mom said that my hair used to be halfway down my back when it was natural. And this is when she took care of it but she didn't know about protective styles and she didn't trim it often so I know my hair has some growth potential. Especailly if I do all the things she didn't. Anyway I got it pretty early in life which sucks because it took me until now to see what my natural hair looks like. But you would never believe how long my hair used to be if you saw me now. Even though it was broken (which is why they cut it after my perm) I'm really angry that they would do that to me. I'm only 13 right now though so I've got time to get it back there.

I don't even remember my age; but it was very early. I was just relieved that I didn't have to endure that terrible hot comb anymore! I think as children we are bamboozled into getting relaxers because we were soo afraid of that heat from the hot comb. We would endure anything as opposed to getting our hair pressed.

I had my first one when I was about 3. My hair used to be shoulder length, strong, thick and naturally curly. Now, after many straight years my hair is a short, shedding mop.

AuNaturale4, OH MY GOODNESS! The Just for Me tapes! I totally forgot about them. I do remember putting them in my big old tape player and listening to them while getting my hair relaxed. I don't even remember what they were about I just remember the song: Just-For-MEE-EE. lol WOW. That took me back. Thank you, AuNaturale4.

Well, back to the question: I had to have been about 3/4 when I had my 1st relaxer.

I got my first perm around 10 or 11 I don't really remember. My mom said it was a rite of passage into womanhood.

I remember one time my head burned so badly and I was crying in the sink as it was being washed out. All that was told to me was that pain was beauty. No one made it stop. I should have learned from then. I used to have hair almost to my butt (pics of me at about 7 or 8) after the crack, I only saw pictures of my hair at shoulder length.

I wish even if I was permed that my mom had made me do deep conditioning/cowashing and regular hair care. The lack of is probably why my hair broke off so badly.
