I thought about posting this on the parenting/pregnancy forum but it really is all about decorating.

We are (excitedly and cautiously) expecting our first baby and will be moving to a new house and have started thinking of nursery ideas.

We really want to create a vibrant (no pastels) nursery and we have settled on an Afrocentric or at least a Black is Beautiful type theme but for the life of me I can't find any vendors or photos of this sort of nursery online.

Anyone have any photos or suggestions?

maybe you'll just have to improvise and find decor with the color scheme that you like (Greens, Reds, etc.). I could how hard that would be to find online! African prints are huge right now, so I'm sure you could find little accents and linens, especially during spring

Good Luck!

.....Anyone have any photos or suggestions?

Sure, but give us something to work with. Ie: gender, color scheme, what do you have in mind?.

I have several thoughts, I just don't want to be all over the place.

Thanks for the encouragement Darbysmash!

Fuzziwuz - We want the room to be gender neutral. Our idea is to create a room of warm, deep contrasting colors that would help baby focus and concentrate. We are anti-pastel..lol..
I'm thinking something with a retro 70s vibe - a la Black is Beautiful.

I'm hoping to find some interesting child appropriate accessories and accent pieces.

Sorry, I took so long. I'm not a designer, but I thought I'll toss some ideas your way. Try to get a visualization of the idea because what's requested would probably be custom made. I found difficulty tying in the theme in a whimsical sense. So we may have to improvise. Also I hope you have assistance, plus someone artsy/crafty to materialize.

Color schemes:

1. Brown/Beige w/ white and peach
2. Spring green/ red w/ black and white
3. Pumpkin/ teal w/ similar color gradients and white

OPTION #1

Although you don't prefer pastels, I choose this image because it looks warm and inviting and best suits your theme.

Paint room silimar to image
Draw arch & tree, or opt for tree murals or decal.

Black love is all about unity, family, celebrating history, culture and love. So to incorporate:

Take photos of the family with baby, resembling a retro look. ie: pregnant mother w/ father; baby with parents; mother w/ child, and the famous "Roots" image shirtless father raising child to the sky. If choosing color scheme # 2: black/white photos. Option #2: take various pictures (close-ups) of the baby's expressions (or body parts), use dark brown frames. Option # 3 - Get photo quality imagery of kids from the web.

If you're opting for a tree mural, add small family members photos on the branches. Peel off decals offer frame option.
Frame and post an image of the Presidential family.
Select African/Black inspired textiles for bedding, throws, changing table and curtains. Since your theme is unique, create a duvet cover for bedding. Use textile on curtains, and add cowrie shells on natural fabric valances. If textile isn't soft, use as dust ruffle or create a bumper and find bedding set to compliment textile. Custom textile or use their patterns: http://www.spoonflower.com/tags/african (http://www.spoonflower.com/tags/african) . The Black American search are nice prints, but not for a nursery.
Create a textile room border using Adrinka Symbols
Create an Adrinka Symbol mobile stimulating the brain while sending wishes.
Bare wall near bedding? Find the most important Adrinka symbol, stencil or decal and create a flourished monogram.
Add touches to lamps, by either adding a monogram, a symbol or a fringe cowrie shell. Add similar touches on throw pillows.
Add a bookshelf. Shelve with children's books from black authors. Add whimsical black figurines, black stuffed rag dolls
Stuffed animals. If you're aiming for 70's, add stuffed panthers. Tribal: Add tall giraffes to fill corners, lions, cheetahs, colorful animals that compliment decor. If taking this route, add whimsical tribal animal masks.
Use patterns and shapes sparing on walls and furniture.... and aim for a whimsical effect.

OPTION #2 - color scheme: spring green/red.

Color walls partially. Maybe top spring green and bottom half with molding white, or vice-versal. Add whatever items stated above to combine in colors. I'm not really fond of green/red (christmasy), but if I had no option, I'd choose the pattern described in the image as a focal point. Using red or black frames.

Add red sparingly... the nursing chair, rugs, frames, pattern wall drapes. Change draw knobs to room colors. Finishing touches use black. Add a plush carpeting.

OPTION # 3: Pumpkin/Teal

The colors in this scheme seems child like. Orange can be over stimulating like red, so use sparingly: one wall, half room or on furniture. Tone the brightness to pumpkin. Whimsical decals are easy to find, add colorful growth charts. Add colorful patterns on furniture... stripes, dots, and solid accessories. Consider beige walls if white's too bright. Select pictures of unity. Add plush stuffed bears. Add customized decal imagery of playful children with afros

have fun with color, by using lighter shades of teal and pumpkin in addition to richer colors. Paint ceilings teal and add clouds. Play with furniture, add colors and make the room more kid friendly. The following are orange room designs.

I hope this information is useful. The request may not tie into the colorful/ playful aspects, but I say make it work by finding child like items. I didn't proofread... pardon, it's late. Hey, post an image on whatever you decide. I'd like to see the final result and theme combined. Best wishes and congratulations.

Fuzziwuz - Great ideas and links. You have a good eye. Lots of the ideas you list, are also on my list! Thanks for such a thorough response. It really helped.

I've decided (at least this week..lol) on a purple, orange and honey color scheme. We're going to go with a natural wood color for the furniture and I'm busy crocheting dolls and yarn figures for accessories.

I'm going to make a mural of tree of life similar to the one in the link posted with an Adinkra Sankofa bird in the tree. The Sankofa as both hearts and bird will be featured in a blanket a friend is currently making for the baby.

I have plans to make silhouette art of my husband and myself - ball cap (him) and big fro me and a nappy little baby.

I am planning to make a mobile/chandelier mashup of the following two ideas
the elephant mobile -http://www.modernnursery.com/itemsDetail.cfm/RollephantsMobile/0/item_num/NTR-MB-EL/pcid/11/cid/93

this ribbon chandelier http://livingwithlindsay.com/2010/05/pottery-barn-knock-off-tutorial-ribbon-and-bird-chandelier.html

I think I may have found the color scheme and most of the elements. I just cant decide on what to put on the crib and the floor. I was thinking about plain white organic sheets for the crib but the floor will need a rug. We are moving to a house with basic beige carpet and that just won't do.

Any ideas about flooring?

Also, we are going for a minimalist room - not a lot of furniture or accessories and cant decide if we want a changing table with storage or just to convert the top of the dresser into a changing table...thoughts?

Thanks all.

RE: Flooring. Since the nursery is authentic, consider a custom rug. Incorporate nursery colors and create a specific design. The following are examples of custom colorful designs.

Re: Changing table. Consider a convertible changing table w/ tower. The furniture has good height and storage unit that is easily accessible to obtain supplies, plus dresser space. There isn't any space on top with a typical dresser. You would either need another table to place supplies or take your eye off the table to get it. Then there's a height issue. With convertible tables, one hand on child, other hand easily reach supplies.
