Manhattan/BX/Queens/BK is cool.

I was looking around the board and was considering this--

^^I would also look into Locks n Chops--locksnchops.com. I don't have locs, but I found the salon by searching this forum and went to get my hair done yesterday. I don't know how much they charge, or if that's even an issue for you, but there were about 5 people in there getting their locs maintenanced, and they all walked out looking fabulous. I also overheard one of the guys mention he used to be at Khamit Kinks, I believe his name was Lamonte. They have a location on 34th (where I went), in Harlem on 135th and in Brooklyn on Schnectady. I really enjoyed it and will definitely be back.

I have been going to Locks N Chops for years now, since I first started my locs. They are great when it comes to hair consultations, natural hair care and loc maintenance. Orin, the owner, came up with my hair color when I wanted to dye it and I've kept the same color for 5 years. When you're there, they are professional but you also feel like family at the same time. They can be kinda pricey if you aren't looking to splurge a little, but your hair will look and smell beautiful when you leave, guaranteed.

Now, if you want to know who the best loc stylist in NYC is, it's hands down, Kawan. He used to work out of a salon on 125th Street. Not so great side: it's all the way in the Bronx, so you'd have to make the hike, but the brother is a genius when it comes to styling locs. He is wiiiiicked when it comes to hooking up a rod set into an elegant mohawk or a beautiful French roll. Every time I've gotten my hair done by him, I get stopped many times on the street by people in awe of my style--and I'm talking about black people, white people, Asians, etc. I also like that he doesn't use too many gels or gunk in my locs and they feel moisturized and "done" for a long time after the appointment. Trust me, go for it! Look up "Kawans Locshop" on Facebook.

@ RadiantAuburn: Thanks for the info on locksnchops. I was just about to ask if anyone experienced them. I'm not loc'ed but natural and would love for someone to take care my hair. I live in upstate new york so I do travel down to get my hair done. So far I have been to Nubian Kinks and Turninghead Day Salon. I like them both. Turning head is a bit pricey but have more staff, very professional and friendly. Nubian Kinks is small with about 2-3 staff members, very friendly, but could use a secretary for phones and they can be slow at times. I'm going to try locksnchops next.

Yendys (http://www.cowrieshellcenter.com/viewer/home/index.asd/vts/design003) in Brooklyn. She's amazing and I can't recommend her highly enough! I mean, going to her to get my hair done was a complete experience. I left centered and it was so much more than getting my hair styled. :)
