Do I shampoo my hair before getting locs?

It would be best to just to remove any residue because it's nice to start your new set with a clean head of hair.

Does it matter what kind of shampoo I use? I heard that I shouldn't use shampoos that leave residue.

Me personally, I used a clarifying shampoo before my locks were installed, so that I was able to get off to a really clean start. Just don't use any type of conditioner afterwards...it leaves a film.

Yes, IMO it's best to start locs with a clean head of hair.

Shampoo before, and after, regularly.

I agree with my sistahs. I shampooed before as well. I didn't use a clarifying shampoo, but I did very soon afterward, when I started adding and transitioning into products suited for my babies (about a week in).
