I found a great site that offers all the ingredients needed to make well blended lotions that will have a long shelf life. It also lists recipes. Here it is:

http://www.fssoapworks.com/lotionrecipes.html

This is the hair and scalp recipe I'm planning to make:

Distilled water
MSM (4 grams)
Avocado butter (or unrefined avocado oil)
aloe vera gel
olive oil pomace
grape seed oil (unrefined)
Vitamin C
sorbitan stearate
isoteroyl lactylate
germaben II

I'm kinda wary about the germaben since its made from propylene glycol but products that contain water need a preservative.

I MAY have found an alternative to your preservative problem...

www.aubrey-organics.com claims to use as a preservative:

"Citrus Seed Extract-My own natural preservative blend, composed of grapefruit seed extract, vitamins A, C and E (as well as Neem oil for maximum effectiveness). It extends the shelf life of product by no less than one year, and sometimes as much as three years, depending on the product."

Thanks delightfulflame. I decided to pass on the Germaben. It's a potent anti-fungal/mold, bacterial agent that has a high irritancy rate and it releases formaldehyde. It's approved for use in the US but banned in many countries. Not good.

I'm going to look into the grapefruitseed extract.

I also read that rosemary EO extract proctects againct rancidity.
