I know this is slightly off-topic, but I need to know. I just spent 10 minutes chopping onions for my chowder, it really shouldn't take that dang long. But my eyes were (and still are) burning. I've been told to breath through my mouth....doesn't work; rinse it in cold water....didn't work today.

So, :dunno: How do YOU keep from crying in the kitchen?

To prevent my eyes from tearing I'll either:

1) hold my breath while I cut them... I'll stand over them and cut for as long as I can take before I need to inhale again.

2) cut them in a pot filled with water. When they're under water I'm fine.

Whenever I cut onions, I have tears POURING down my face. My eyes are red for over an hour afterwards. You know what worked for me? Ski goggles. Sounds crazy, but It works. Just remember to take them off before your guests arrives.

Refrigerating your onions will just about eliminate the eye watering. Some say that doing that cuts the flavor, but I haven't found that at all.

Two methods I use:

1. A cheap mini food procesor from walgreens does the trip. Cut into quarters and throw it into the machine.

2. The freezer trick does work. Pop your onlions into the freezer until cold but not frozen. Chop as usual.

Put ur onions in the fridge ...that way there not as juicy so they dont make your eyes burn! :D

Edited: Someone suggested that already. My other advice ...wear goggles! lmao youll look silly but it will work!

Edit 2: Someone suggested the goggles too!! okay lemme read the post first THEN suggest maybe cutting them UNDER running water (might be a little messy) or getting someone to cut em for u...okay i dunno anymore!

I've heard that rubbing lemon juice on the knife and cutting board helps.

wow. i always refrigerate my onions. i never correlated the cool temperature with not having the tearing problem. i thought that certain types of onions were worse than others for causing tears.

i almost always buy vidalia sweet onions. but every once in a while, i'll buy a yellow onion. and that's when my eyes tear up like crazy. i actually have to back away from the cutting board and collect myself.

That does work, although I don't understand why :dunno:

LilkinkyC say's that refrigerated onions don't stop her tearing. Wow, that's something, because it's always worked for me.

i run 'em under cold water. cut in half, run more cold water. and cut with the open part down. i cut onions alot cuz i use 'em alot so i'm fast.

most times i cut the whole onion and refridgerate, that way i don't have to cut it again 1 or 2 days later.

When cutting onions you dont cut off the part that has the stringy roots, that causes the onion to "bleed" and that's what makes your eyes sting.

My parents used to wear the safety googles when I was younger! My dad's an engineer and would bring them home from work.

Pour out about 8 oz of red or white wine or gin in a glass

Get your Etta James or Billie Holiday CD and put it in the CD Player..turn volume up to 20

Take sip of wine or gin

Listen to what Billie or Etta is talking about

Take onion and slice, dice or chop with knife

Take sip of wine or gin

Put sliced diced or chopped onion in bowl

Listen to what Billie or Etta is talking about

Take 2 sips of wine or gin...4 IF YOU REALLY KNOW what Billie or Etta are talking about

Yes you will be crying but at this point..it doesn't matter

:pointlaugh:

Sorry ya'll but I couldn't think of a new idea other than cutting under running water or cutting in a bowl of water :D

At my house, the onions are stored in the fridge. I rinse them with cold water after I peel them and before I start chopping them.....works for me. ;)
