A little corner for Canadian peeps.

Most of you miss out on the first Canadian gathering.
I don't if some of you are still interrested to plan out the next one in spring> Since the Canadian members is getting bigger, it would be MORE fun to have more of the Canadain nappturality members to join in. We still don't know where but some of us mention TO for the next one. TO IS NOT final. It should be between TO and MTL. It will give us something to look forward after the COLD a%$ winter.

So here are my questions

1. So who is in ?
2. What city would to have the gathering?
3. Tentative date in spring?

I think right now we're trying to decide between Toronto and Montreal for our spring gathering.

I recently purchased tickets for this:

Maya Angelou - The Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts
Date: Thursday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m.
Price: $28.74-73.34
Maya Angelou has been hailed as one of the greatest speakers of our times. Her words have been a source of inspiration, comfort, encouragement and strength for millions of people around the world. A poet, playwright, producer, director, conductor, actor, best-selling author and social activist, she claims no single profession and excels at all those she undertakes.

If anyone is interested, my seats are 26 and 27 in row N. Tickets were $166.40 in total. Expensive, I know...but I've always wanted to see Dr. Angelou and so this will be a real treat for me. I'll be going with my mother.

How are you guys doing?

Hey Chayou, I'm not sure if I am going to go to that, but my friends might be interested. Speaking of the Ashanti Room - I tried to go there last week to buy some mudcloth. I didn't realize it changed locations until I stood there in the FREEZING cold at bathurst and bloor. I can't believe I am that out of it - when did they move???? Anyway, I'll probably make a trip sometime soon to get my cloth.

I'm doing okay though...just packing and getting ready for my move! Going to a Toronto Raptors game this Sunday as well as a SUPERBOWL party!!

I remember hearing about the Maya Angelou event last year. I totally forgot about it. I might consider going !!

Hey Chayou! What's up? I'm okay...just really busy at work.

D, how was 'When Sistas Speak?'

SweetAfrica
01-22-2003, 03:29 AM
Ooo <--- for Ja Rule and Ashanti

That's dry, it reminds me of DC3 last year...or was that 2 years ago when they were booed at halftime during the b-ball finals.

Well, I'm not a fan of the two although some of their songs are nice.

Chayou
01-22-2003, 03:33 AM
It's not even a matter of liking their songs or not! They have to know when to stop. One, two songs together are okay, but a Jashanti routine is irritating!

Doing fine SweetA. Started school again and my teachers don't remember their school days. Work and School don't match, but we got to do it!

What about you?

SweetAfrica

I know...profs love to assign work like their class is the only one your enrolled in  I do not miss the university workload.

Overall I'm okay...I can't really complain (well, I try not to). I know things could be a lot worse so I'm trying to take things in stride. Like you I also feel bombarded with work at times so I haven't been visiting the boards as often as I used to.

=============================================

I can't wait to see you all, and the rest of the Nappturals in the area in the spring. It should be fun!

Let's start planning our gathering. We have to choose the city, then the organizing committee.

I'm leaning more towards meeting in Toronto now...sorry ladies....

Just a question...those of you who can't make it to Toronto, is it because of the distance...cost...? Or can you not afford the time to travel over?

I realized that I will be doing a lot of traveling this spring/summer (NYC twice and Ghana) and I can't afford the trip to Montreal this time around...so no Jazz Festival

SweetAfrica
01-22-2003, 10:29 PM
Thanks Kandy,

Don't worry, I understand.

I'm almost 100% certain that I won't be able to make it to Montreal :( I guess if there are other nappturals in Montreal who were interested in driving down to Toronto you all could carpool together. Of course, if everyone prefers to meet in Montreal this spring then I'll just skip this meeting and try to make it out to the next - it would be unfortunate, cause I'd like to meet all of you, but I'm fine if that's what ends up happening.

I have a suggestion. People from TO could crive up to OTT and I will drive them to Mtl. The downfall is that I wouls only have 3 sets available. Is that cool with TO peeps?

P.S My vote is fro TO. I haven't gone ever since Caribana 2001.

It was a lot of fun!!!

The shoot started at about 3:30-4pm and ended at about 6pm.

I took lots of pics but I had my cam on a high quality setting so I'm having some trouble uploading these huge files onto the net...i'm too lazy to resize them all :?

I have 9 out of 50 up now but I as you see I have a way to go. I'll let you know when they're all up. I do a bit at a time.

Keep in mind that my pics are not the ones that will be used in the magazine (I think they may use one or two) because I took "behind the scenes" pics.

I ended up taking more pics than I thought...I didn't participate very much. I think I'm in 5-6 different scenes (I only have pics of 3 of them - during the other shots my bf was busy talking to friends so he didn't take any pics...

I hope to have all pics up by Tuesday at the lastest...I'm uploading now as I type!

Stay tuned

great pics, Sweet A - glad to see the sisterhood vibe alive and well in the T.Dot!! I can't wait to go to the Ashanti Room!! I know I will be getting some fabrics and I also fell in love with the baskets in the pictures. Ashtani Room should "borrow" some of your pictures for their website - you did a good job on capturing the essence of the store (and I haven't even been there yet!!!!).

when does the magazine? poster? pics comeo out?

Um, you'd call this weather nice? Okay, you have thicker skin than me because I was shivering from the office to my car this evening  I will admit that it was "milder" than the past few days but nice?...I'm not ready to say that yet :)

btw...I didn't know you had 2 brothers...so do I!

Now ladies, you have to admit the weather was way better today! And just like you LadyD, I was so ready to go somewhere in the Carribean.

But lucky me, I'm going to the Connecticut for the weekend. My sister-in-law had a boy and I'm so excited. It's the first nephew in the family! Just like you guys, I have two brothers.

Okay, nough' said about me.

02-03-2003, 12:55 AM
hey ladies - I'm all moved in!! The move turned out to be more stressful than I had hope :? but I managed to find a little spot to lay my mattress so I can rest!

SweetA - sorry I didn't email those pics as I promised. My cable, phone and internet will not be hooked up until later this week or early next week (I have to stay at home all day to wait for these techs-arrgh!!). But as soon as I am up and running I will email them. I haven't signed in to picturetrail for ages..I will see if I can still have access to those pics!

anyway, I am here at work and VERY tired. My shoulders hurt from all the lifting. So far I have EXTREMELY nice neighbours! And everyone seems to have a pet?

that is my sob story for the day!

hope everyone had a good weekend! The weather was so nice (whopps sorry Sweet A - I mean better than last week's weather) yesterday.! How was Connecuit Chayou? I have a friend there but have never visited

SweetAfrica
02-03-2003, 02:42 AM
 Today WAS nice...considering it is winter!

Congrats on your move D! I know getting everything hooked up and running can be a pain! Do not worry about the pics...it's not urgent by any means, take your time.

Chayou how was Conneticut? How's your new nephew? I'm sure he's a cutie :)

Chayou
02-03-2003, 03:03 AM
Good luck at your new place LadyD.

Connecticut was great. I saw people I have not seen in 10 years! My nephew is very cute and he's not afraid of people. We were taking pictures the whole time and he did not mind at all going from hand to hand.

I went to that beauty supply store to get some braid and they have a lot of stuff. Did not really ckeck cause I was on a rush, but the next time I go over, I'll make time to buy some products.

The only thing I never never seem to be able to get over in the States is ''Customer service''. It's sad to say, but most of the sales person have no clue whatsover what that it. Most of the time, I felt like I was bothering the people and not spending my money in their stores. Oh well, everything can't be great.

How was your weekend?

thanks Chayou! I know what you mean about the lack of Customer Service. I make frequent trips to the States and I am appauled at the Customer Service you receive at some places. Of course, I don't want to generalize all American places. Canada has its share of bad customer service reps. But I have had a few experiences where a simple thank you, how can I help you would have been nice.

Have you ever been to the islands? I remember going to a ticket counter and my girl was doing her nails and didn't lift her head to speak to me until she was finished!

I guess it just depends on certain people u run into....

Yeah, we are organizing a second gathering. We're planning for the spring and we're still deciding on the location. Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto are the choices.

btw...How long have you been natural?

Hi Sweetafrica,

Thanks for replying. I`ve been natural since June 2001. I`ve been wearing braids since October `02 and now I really, really need to take them out! But I`m looking for a product to make my hair soft. I haven`t introduced myself formally..but i will soon. :)

Will the gathering be around march-april?

New sisters on the board! Wonderful! Welcome Joy, Nappi and MightyAfrodite.

SA, it's pretty hectic here. School, work and whatever's left to do.

We should probably have the gathering at the end of April. Most of us will be out of school by this time. And I'm voting for Toronto!

Talk you y'all later

Thnaks you all for the support. I have been out of the loup for a while with nappturality.com and our next gathering. Since I'm am unable to drive for the next 2 months  . I rather have the meeting in may. I think it would be a perfect opportunity to meet and to enjoy the new season.

Someone ask me a while back, where I find my Dominican wheat cream and others products for natural in Mtl. I found them at Beaute des Antilles in Montreal (4290 Bélanger Est - between Pie IX and 25e Ave, 514-374-9202)

I hope I answered all your questions

Hello everyone!
I know it's been a while that I haven't posted in the forum but I am kind of busy with school ( university)!
So I'm in for a second gathering!
I would definitively prefer Montreal (because it's where I live!) :)
And I would like to do it in April or may. Preferably in May because I'm going to end Universtity on that month.
I 'm going to start wearing my natural hair out on March 15th and I will probably post more in the forum then!

Hi Jess! Nice to see you chiming in! Okay, so you prefer Montreal too, good, we'll start a poll in a few more days to select the city. Then I guess we can vote on the meeting time since that probably depends on where the gathering will take place.

Just passing this along... Check out the calendar events at the ROM. This Friday, Feb 21st, in celebration of African History Month, Music Africa, presenters of AfroFest, Toronto's annual festival of African music, brings "African Musical Traditions" ('http://www.afrofest.org/features.htm') to the Royal Ontario Museum.

Performing artists (http://www.afrofest.org/-ROM.htm) will be from Uganda, Cameroon and Ghana.

For more events at the ROM visit their website (http://www.rom.on.ca/) and click "What's On Calendar".

I didn't know this, and you may not have either, but admission to the ROM is FREE every Friday after 4:30pm. My bf and were there on V-day and it was great.

wow, our little thread has sank to the bottom!! Just wanted to give u an update on my hair....I've decided to start all over with extensions...to give my hair a fuller and hopefully will grow into a fuller look. My appt is on friday...I'll take some before and after pics.

But after much comtemplation(sp), two locticians, several headwraps and tams later, I've made my decision.

I haven't been on the boards lately..but I know how some ladies are when it comes to using something "not true" or "fake"...which is okay, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'm not really seeking board approval. I had my own issues for a bit too...

but if all else fails.....I'll be sportin my India.Arie, lauryn hill TWA:)

hope everyone (whoever is left out there) is doing well out there!

@LadyD - Girl, I love your hair curly and loc.... but hey, if its not working out... don't fight whats natural. Take pictures....

I will be coming to the Nappy Hair Affair 4 sure. I will love to spend a least 3 or 4 days in TO. As for those from Mtl and Ottawa if you wish to join me let me know asap. :D

I'm feeling much better now a days. I'm taking good care of myself. Working out 4 times a week and changing my eating habits. Now, my kidney are fonctionning at 78% by itself. On another note, I have notice in our home - Nappturalitycom - some members is getting a bit nasty- so I'm trying to stay away from negativity.

Hi all!

I'm a natural from Toronto - can you post more info on the Nappy Hair Fair when you get it? I'm very interested in attending.

Also, do any of you go to salons or barbershops to get a trim (in Toronto , Mississauga or Brampton preferably)? I'm interested in getting a trim, but I'm skeptical about just walking into a place. I'd prefer to go somewhere that has experience with fro's, and knows the difference between a "cut" and a "trim".

Thanks!

Hey karatebear *waving* ...I almost missed this thread.

I think what Sab posted about the Nappy Hair Affair is pretty complete :D Was there something in particular you wanted to know about it? Looks like most of us will be there in May, perhaps we could meet up there.

About a salon that deals with afro hair...hmmm...are you talking twa or slightly bigger/longer than a twa? If you're referring to a low-ish afro I'd check a barber shop like Nappy's. I've never had my hair cut there but people (men and women) are often referred there for fades and low cuts. If you mean longer/bigger afros then I'm stumped...I don't know. I have always cut my own hair (I think it's something like 16-18 inches or so but don't quote me on that  ...I haven't accurately measured in over a year). If you do find some place to go please share your experience here.

Good luck!

Wow, I was just wondering if there was anyone here from Canada (i.e. the GTA area) and I found this post. I would love to go to that event but I will be moving to Winnipeg just before the event. If you have any info on upcoming events please let us know.

Also, does anyone here live in Winnipeg?? I am a bit nervous moving there since I am not sure if I will be able to find all the products and supplies I need for my hair. I wouldn't mind getting together with nappturals in the GTA area too! :D

Hi,

I'm not from Winnipeg but I had a chance to spend a couple of months there when my aunt and uncle lived there for 3 years. They loved it except for the cold winters. I think you will find the basic products, there a couple of ethnic stores there also. If i was you I could purchase so of the product thats are already difficult to find in GTA cuz it will be harder to find in Winnipeg since the black community is way smaller than TO. I will try to send you the address of some of the places I went to.

Hi there,

I'm a napptural from Toronto. I've been checking out the message boards for a while (this one especially) and finally summoned up enough courage to write. Perhaps I should point out that I'm completely new to message boards/chat rooms/online communities - see I don't even know the correct terminology :( . The first message I ever posted was to the introduction forum...5 minutes ago :).
But then I thought why stop with just one message. Go big like an afro. So here I am. I just wanted to say a quick hi to the Canadian nappturals and thanks for the info on the Nappy Hair Fair (I've already written it in my calendar).

I look forward to talking to you guys more.

I'd love to see you all at the Nappy Hair Affair (NHA) in May. I will likely be there after 5pm just because I have rehearsal until 5...I may be able to sneak out early but I wouldn't count on that.

Listen, May 17th is still over a month away, if anyone is up for it we can have a mini gathering here in Toronto before then, maybe around mid April... that way we can include NEA  and get to know each other a bit before the hectic NHA *lol*

I'm good most weekends (Saturdays after 5pm and Sundays after 12pm) so if anyone is interested we can plan to meet at a restaurant like we did in Ottawa last November...we had a very nice time and the ladies will tell you that we spent less than 10% of the 4 hours together talking about hair *lol*

If not, I'm fine with meeting in May :D

By the way NEA, I work in Mississauga!

Okay...wait a moment...conflicting data! So is this at Faubourgh or at Cecil
Community Centre? I'll have to give Steph a call. AND I just realized that it ENDS at 5pm  What tha...??? I may miss this! I take my rehearsals (1:30pm-5pm) very seriously and I wouldn't want to skip one... but on the other hand... :? Two weeks ago my dance friends (all natural) and I were thinking about going to this together...now I have to go and let them know that we'll likely all miss it due to rehearsal unless we go really early but what good would that be? :(. I guess the first step is finding out where exactly it will be taking place...then I'll let you all know if I can make it or not.

Don't worry ACD, we're not planning a big shing ding, just a meet-n-greet and swap ideas session. Probably a weekend evening...3-4 hours or so. Even if you just stop by for a short while that will be fine.

I live just north of Scarborough and I'm willing to travel just about anywhere in the GTA if that's cool with everyone <--- staying in the GTA.

Any suggestions for a date?

What about a restaurant or activity?

Let's brainstorm some ideas!

Thanks for clearing that up Nappyjudy, so the location for the Nappy Hair Affair has been changed to Faugourgh Restaurant - Got it! I'm pretty certain that I cannot attend and meet everyone, rehearsals are downtown :(. I will go early though (12pm) to check things out...I'll likely be the only one there . You all have a great time and take pics!

FYI: For the lovers of South African music check out "A Celebration of South African Culture" ('http://www.harbourfront.on.ca/worldstage/dumaurier/indaba/index.php') at the Elgin Theater. Tickets range from 35 to 75 dollars depending on the show.

Four Feature Shows:
A Woman in Waiting
Carmen
The Mysteries

I was planning to see Carmen with my father next week he really loves and appreciates South African music. I wish we could see them all but the shows are EXPENSIVE. It would have been nice if they sold a package or something :? Ah, well I'll be happy if I get to see at least one show.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I'd like to come to an earleir get together as well. My final exams are over on the 14th. But since I've taken so much time off already to study I dont know how well that will go.

But the Nappy Hair Fair is definetly a yes. I will be there. I'll make the time to come.

I hope the message board acting up isn't an April Fools joke or anything.

Hey cococure! Great! Looks like we may be able to get together this month!

I've tried to continue our discussion over here (http://www.nappturality.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=4270) I don't know what's wrong with this thread.

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to clarify that The Nappy Hair Fair will be at the Faubourg Restaurant and not at the Cecil Community Centre.

Thanks
