Is it better to use Rollers, or straws?? I have a perm now and im trying to find a style to wear until i chop off all my permed ends, how long does it take to do a straw set? I really dont have the patience to spend too much time on my hair...my only other choice is to go to a salon which is way too much(70$)
and Im really tired of always getting my hair done I really want to find something i can do myself.Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?? I dont know anything about hairstyles...

I've never heard of using rollers for a straw set. When I was still relaxed and transitioning, I almost lived by straw sets. Definitely straws. Definitely.

Anybody else?

There are some hairstyles in the 'Transitioners' section of the website. That's where I'm getting mine from...

As a transitioner, there aren't a lot of options we have for our hair. There are straw sets, roller sets, twists, braids, twist outs and braid outs... Ok maybe more than I thought.
When I did rollersets for the first month and a half. I would take some hair at the fromt and slick it down to create a frame for my face (I have on oval shaped face). But once I realised (sp?) that they were a tad too dressy for everyday life I've switched over to the twist out. It lasts much longer... and... well... I just like it better :D All styles are really easy to do, but they take time to master, expect to be frustrated, but keep at it, you'll get better, and your hair will thank you for it. Try to avoid styles which force you to straighten your roots, as it may damage the hair. If you're going to stick with the straw sets, straws will create smaller coils, whereas rollers will create larger curls. It depends on how large you want the curls to be.

ITA! WHen I was transitioning, straw sets (with straws) were my signature style.

I loved my straw set as a transitioner. (Check my album out for a pic. Also check out synergy, who was my inspiration for the style.) I used straws, but some people use small perm rods (aka jheri curl rollers), and get the same look as a straw set.

I have used both. You can check my transitioning styles for straw sets and a in my napptural kids folder for a picture of the rods. I think straws are easier to use because you don't have to deal with getting the tension right before you close that rubber clasp.

Ok now that kinda makes sense... its more straw set-esque. Cuz I'm over here like "How's it a STRAW set if you don't use STRAWS?" . Alright, now I'm better...

What about straw sets after you've already transitioned? Has anyone done one?

I haven't done what but I am thinking about it. If someone has done one, how long did it last?

I did one. It lasted for about a week for me. I have very tightly coiled hair(4b-i think), so my hair began to resemble locs after three or four days.

I'm a transitioner and I love the straw set. I set my entire head with drinking straws that you can get from the dollar store. It took in all about 2½ hours to set and it lasted approximately a week. It's a great transition style.

I too love the straw set, it last long and almost maintenance free. I have used very small flexible rods for a straw set, it gives more of a Shirley Temple look to the curls. On my hair, sets done with these type of rollers don't last as long.

I like the bigger straws ...like the size of Jack N Box straws. The smaller straws are too much work esp if your hair is dense.

ok, so this may be a dumb question but how do you get the straws to stay?

I used bobby pins..I secured one at the base to keep the curl tight.

Similar question to the one above: what do you do with the rollerset-styled hair at night? Do you just tie-up the hair in a scarf?

Do you all do the straw sets yourself? About how long does it take? I do my own twist (I'm not a transitioner) and it takes a lot of time. Also those that do their sets on natural hair, how does it look with shrinkage? I want to do it with my 4' hair but I'm afraid after shrinkage that it'll look like one bead on my scalp.

I tried a perm rod set this month and it came out more coily looking. I used setting lotion, and it's still holding. I haven't tried the straws yet!

I am not talented enough to use the straws for my sets so I use rods.

They look like this:
