DENVER -- A game of street basketball turned violent Thursday evening after a person was shot after his team kept winning.

Denver police say the shooting happened at about 8 p.m. at Westwood Park, at Ohio Avenue and Wolff Street, after several games of basketball.

Apparently, one team was losing to the other and some players on the losing team became upset. That's when a friend of someone on the losing team confronted the winning team.

"Words were exchanged, a gun was taken out and ultimately he shot one of the victims," said Denver police spokeswoman Virginia Lopez.

A 17-year-old Hispanic male was shot in the pelvis and underwent surgery overnight. His condition has not been released.

Police say this type of behavior is totally unnecessary.

"The weather's getting warmer and teenagers will be out playing soccer. They need to keep their tempers in check. This was more than ridiculous," Lopez said.

Denver police are still in the process of interviewing witnesses. They do not yet have a suspect in custody but they say they're confident they'll make an arrest.
