I JUST WANNA WEAR MY HATS!!!! :(

LAST WINTER I bc...I thought by this winter my puff would be neck length.

Its at the back of my head, behind the ears.

But my hats STILL cannot cover that mass-which is getting massive.

I realize I need to hang in there..but wintertimes in Cleveland really, really frustrate me because I can not find a style to accomadate this BIG HAIR AND HATS!!

I will prevail..but any tips?

:( I am have the same EXACT delima...& in Cleveland!! I was trying to find a way to wear my summer straws, but....I told myself that I was gonna research more hat happy styles. I could do braid styles/twists, but those are too semi perm. I'd prefer a style that I can do quickly & still look good. So far I've only come up with the pony puff pulled back.

I achieve a smooth pony puff with lots of brushing, & a combo of gel, Vasoline (no lie), water (just a teensy bit), & a cotton scarf tightly tied for...awhile :dunno: .

I've also been looking EVERYWHERE for some of those (i don't know what you call them or if they even have a name) knit hats that can house my fro during the cold months...almost like the Jamaican hats, but not quite as big...Do you know where I can find them?

Maybe you can use a head wrap. or tie your head in a bandana...I´ve seen some hat shops online that are made for people with locs..They look quite big and I´m sure they would fit... :2cents:

hi neighbor!
well..burlington coat factory has knit hats and capelli hats which are fashionable and do stretch. Kaufmanns in UH also has some BAD hats that stretch and have style

So, I am READY. i HAVE MY grey, black, brown hats read.to.go...but my delimma is your delimma. No matter how much time I put into trying new styles, I end up in a pony puff. I havent learned to let my hair be free. I have to know "where it is" (hahaha  ).When I dont, I'm consumed! So, I hope that helps with the hats. Last winter, I got a big scarf hat that I see locked ladies wear. It goes overyour head and wraps around your neck all in one...I was just hoping to kick my hat style again. Like you, I had my straws set for summer and STILL couldnt do anything!

Well, lay off that vaseline and cotton girl. I slick back with some castor oil and aloe vera. Got to Star Beauty or Longwood and get a silk/satin scarf to tie around muslim style. to cover my puff, I'll but a silk bonnet ontop of that. Your sucking all the moisture out of your hair with that cotton scarf...I know it gives the best waves, but you'll look up one day and have no hair line and broke edges from ear to ear(did it before!!!)and vaseline..well that the mineral oil story and it is not healty or nourishing for your hair. Webbers health food store at Euclid and Greenhas a nice unprotroleum product that has castor oil etc..in it. it's 5bucks and will feed your hair nicely.

Just sad isnt it? I am determined to beat this thing b/c hats are my part of my signature style and I dont want a hat to be the thing that keeps me form enjoying my naps....ironic isnt it? God gave us not only hair, but hair that is truely a crown/hat and all covering!!! But still, we aint in Africa's heat anymore, so I digress...But was a beautiful thought as to WHY our heads are not made to accomadate hats..the hair just does NOT want to comply...but I dont play with the cold

Jack Frost aint NO joke in Cleveland..and I gots to get this together before January! :shocker:

I'll be waiting for more replies, may have to do a protective style with some added hair and call it a day, I'm spending too much time on my hair lately..just to rock an afro puff that wont fit under anything! :pop:

Hey mocha, I new i was gone get it for the petro & cotton girl :pointlaugh:, but eer once in a while, I cheats a lil :doh -- I'm glad you told me about the non petro oil @ webers.

Sounds like we are literally neighbors too!! Boy this is great. I hope Kaufmans still has those hats by the time i make it there.

I know what you mean about fussing with your hair while it's loose. I'm that way when I wear my big a@@ fro for obvious reasons :afro: of course, & also when I was relaxed, I grew sooooo irritated with it not staying put (It made me sick), but the joy of being natural is being free...girl let that puff be free!

Well, looks like this post is coming to an end.

Letting my hair go free will take another level of nappy maturity..This year has been a doozy all by itself-just accepting whom I see in the mirror. Ya see, I was determined to learn how to love the me that God made me to be as I near 40(cough,cough). Just seeing my hair go UP instead of DOWN has been a trip for me. Maybe year two will allow me to free it up-but for now, I've gotta find some protective styles before brotha Jack(frost that is) gets here...ooops...he blew in last night(hahaha).

Well if you see a 5 foo2 nappy brown chick with 6-10 inches, and probably an afro puff shout out at a sista! Good luck with the hats! You may have time!

And thanks for taking the advice well. You know what to do, just do it! Before those beautiful tresses suffer in the winter extremes and cotton and petroleum. You will love the unpetroleum.peaceout

What about styles like box braids and twists with your own hair. You can surely put a hat over those styles. (sorry if this has been mentioned in a previous post). You can free your fro in the Spring and Summer when "brotha Jack frost" isn't bother folks. :P That's what I'm gonna do (or at least try to anyway, I love wearing my hair out). I'll keep some braids or twists under my hats, headwraps, and tobogans this winter. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do.
