The Dreadlock Commandments
Back to HairBRARY Home
http://www.naani.com/the_dreadlock_commandments.htm

i. thou shalt not use 100% beeswax or petroleum based products
heavy pomades and styling elements lead to unhealthy dreadlocks. as your dreadlocks mature, removing the residue they leave behind will prove tedious, if not impossible. it's best to use light oils or those that melt/absorb quickly as they are easier to wash away and are less likely to result in the formation of mildew.

ii. thou shalt not overtwist thine dreadlocks
overtwisting of dreadlocks leads to thinning and breakage. try to avoid twisting dry dreadlocks for it is better to do such maintenance after they have been shampoo'd. in addition when twisting, twist with the lock, not against it for doing so helps to maintain the appearance of neater, healthier dreadlocks.

iii. thou shalt not covet thine neighbor's dreadlocks
although obtaining advice from another with regard to maintenance is advantageous, hoping that this advice will transform your dreadlocks is not. each lock is individual, even those on thine own head. it's best to work with your dreadlocks in ways to make THEM look THEIR best versus trying to make them look like that of another.

iv. thou shalt show thine dreadlocks much love and attention
locks are not a maintenance free style. just because you don't have to use a bunch of electrical appliances doesn't mean they don't require any attention. take time to get to know each of your dreadlocks as all have their own personality. treat your dreadlocks as you would your own children and with time, they'll grow and prosper under thine own hands.

v. thou shalt not start thine dreadlocks too thin
if you want very thin dreadlocks, sister/brotherlocks is the method for you. if you're starting your dreadlocks with any other method, it's best to aim for dreadlocks that are at least the size of a pencil (if not larger). starting your dreadlocks too thin may lead to breakage. as your dreadlocks grow, the heavier they become. the heavier they become, the more pressure they put on the hairs at the scalp. thus, forming a strong foundation at the beginning is essential to lock survival. make sure you build your house on the rock versus the sand.

vi. thou shalt pamper thine dreadlocks
having dreadlocks does not mean that you have to take care of them by yourself. just as you occassionally treat yourself to a dinner and a movie, your dreadlocks deserve a bit of pampering too. if possible, every few months visit a loctician or have someone you trust give your dreadlocks the royal treatment they deserve.

vii. thou shalt creative
what works today may not work tomorrow. your dreadlocks' temperment will change with the weather. dreadlocks, like all hair, respond to heat, humidity, cold...therefore, it's best to be aware of these changes and to adapt accordingly. try new techniques if necessary because remember, if all else fails, you can always try, try again.

viii. thou shalt excercise patience
why do you worry so? did you not realize that the process takes time? dreadlocks do not transform over night for if they did, all would have them. achieving the type of dreadlocks you desire requires much time and patience. allowing yourself to become frustrated and discouraged will get you nowhere. instead of dreaming of how your dreadlocks will be, enjoy them for what they are for only a kid wishes to become an adult and an adult to return a child.

Twist in the direction of the lock. If the lock was installed clockwise, don't twist it counter clockwise when tightening it.
