Nappy Edges & Goldy Locks: African-Americans and the Politics of Hair
Wednesday, April 2, 2003
1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Memorial Union, Mohave 222
Neal Lester, Professor, English

Professor Neal Lester will engage workshop participants in the following lesson. After that, he will lead a discussion of both the content and the methods that he uses.

For African Americans, attitudes toward hair go beyond big hair and a bad hair day.In Nappy Edges and Goldy Locks: African Americans and the Politics of Hair Professor Neal Lester examines the racial and gender identity politics associated with African Americans and their hair. From Barbie to Rapunzel, Lester shows how a national controversy was generated around the issue of African American hair in a children's book and how the issue of hair is central to chauvinistic standards of beauty and femininity. Using dolls, folklore, music, literature, magazine advertisements, and television commercials, Lester questions the extent to which African Americans have and have not moved from internalized racist notions of "good" and "bad" hair.
