What kind of project management software do you use? If you paid for it, how much did it cost? How is the interface? What do you like/dislike about it?

I need a project management application...the sooner the better.

By project management are you talking about software like JD Edwards?

I know how to use Microsoft Project, but I tend to use an Excel spreadsheet.

What I do like about Project over Excel is the ease of moving dates when the entire project start slides, and being able to keep up with labor/resource costs. I also like that you can have the software populate your Outlook task list. The main problem is that most people in the company don't have the software, so it's difficult to share the file with other people.

we have our own software that combines an interface for everyone in our company. so project managers, account managers and business devloppers have their own portal. plus it even has a machine translation and xml translation capabilities...pretty sweet

i think if we didnt have that tool we'd use SDL's translation management system.

MS project is OK but what i dont like about it is that it's very general. for me it's just a fancier way of writing out a to do list on a sheet of paper. i can use it for personal stuff but it's never suited me for professional use

You may want to look on download.com for software - a lot of them are trial versions and some are even free:

I use a software package called activeCollab (http://www.activecollab.com/) which is for individual use or for groups to collaborate on projects through a web interface. I like it a lot. The only thing is the setup is geared towards a techie type who doesn't mind fiddling around on a web server - if you don't mind or know someone else who can set it up for you, it's very handy.

I use a software package from The Omni Group (http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniplan/). Very user friendly interface; price = $150.00.

Minitab and Statistica are good programs. I would also reccomend Microsoft Project.

I'm just now realizing how into open source software I am - I'm stuck in low-budget entrepreneur mode

I completely feel you on that, LOL. I too am an open-source junkie. I do try to donate to some of the makers, because I believe that someone's labor should reap fruits. And it didn't dawn upon me until you posted this that Open Office has software that can be used for project management purposes...
