Let's list the last names of our ancestors and where they are from. If we got a match, let's chat.

(For your protection, do not list living relatives or point out which one is your last name)

My list so far:

BRANSON (Also spelled Branson)- Cartersville, GA

CURRY- Atlanta, GA

GILLIAM (Also spelled Gillum)- Tennessee

LYNN (Also spelled Linn and Lyn)- Cartersville, GA, Cincinnati OH, and Dayton, OH

MCCONNELL- Tennessee, Dayton OH, possibly Pontiac MI

I have census records for all of these last names. I also have marriage certificates for the Lynns and Bransons.

ETA:
WILSON- Indiana, possibly Terre Haute area, and Dayton, OH. Supposedly this was a last name merely adopted by a mulatto named Joe during the late 1800s/early 1900s. Anything before that, I'm most likely not related to that Wilson. No census or any other information for this last name.

WOFFORD-Cartersville, GA. My family married into them (several times ), housed some of their kids, etc. I only have census info on them (1870-1920).

PALMER- Toledo, OH. Not directly related to them, but one lady with no children married my gg father
and raised my g mother and siblings. Just curious where her people are from.

Brown-- originally from South Carolina, now based in Maryland (This last name is from the slave owner who owned members of my family. My great grandfather and my grandfather were both named (first and last name) after him.)

Bing--- originally from Austria (my great great great great grandfather was from here, when he came to America married 3 woman one was white, 1 black , and 1 Mexican) and South Carolina

Butler --Florida (This name was last name of my father's mother. She was half Indian, father was a member of the Seminole tribe in Flordia. The camp that they belonged to was known as the Butler camp, so I am guessing that is were they got the last name from.)

The above three are the names of my father's family members, and are used to as the description of our family: BBB Family. We have reunions every year, and this year will be meeting in Salisbury, Md. We always meet the first weekend in August and have been doing so for 30 years.

Stewart-- Philadelphia, PA

Conway-- Wetipquin, Maryland

Sheldon--Wetipquin Maryland

Deshields- Wetipquin, Maryland

The above three are the roots to my mother's family. For the past 10 years we have been holding reuions for the children and grandchildren of my grandmother MaryRose (Conway) Stewart. Last year we branched out and included other members of the family.

My last name is Bright- In my search on ancestry.com. I found out my relatives orginated in South Carolina and migrated to Alabama (Baldwin County) and Florida. My grandfather's family is primarily from Alabama and he was born in FL. I hear there are still a lot of Brights in Fla. I think central FL

Paternal grandmother's family- Bosby, Bonner, Mitchell- Baldwin County AL (Mobile area).

Paternal grandfather- Bright of course and my great grandmothers 1st husband's last name was Lambert, so most of my grandfather's siblings are Lamberts.

Maternal grandfather- Thomas. At a loss of this family since my grandfather didn't share much about his family. My mother is trying to find a list of names he gave her before he passed away. He was from Mississippi. I know my mom was born in Drew, MS.

Maternal grandmother- Byrd and Dean from MS. My great grandmother's 1st husband was a Morgan. She had 2 kids by him. I know there are a lot of Byrds out there and they do a family reunion. But I have never been able to figure out how I"m related to them, so I have never attended the family reunions. The Byrd's in my family migrated to Chicago (where I am) and Toledo, OH

could this first name have at one point, been a last name? My grandfather traced the family history once and I know of a plantation owner in the area named Squire or Squires where the family name was derived.

Byrd in Mississippi- we may be related. My great-grandfather's name was Gus Byrd and he was married twice. My maternal grandmother's maiden name was Byrd. There are a lot in Toledo, OH
[/b]

Napturallyme, my paternal great grandmother's maiden was name Mary Byrd from MS. She married a man named Joseph Rash (paternal great grandfather). Wow, the prospect of possibly finding relatives on here is exciting!

Yeah the prospect is exciting. I know the Byrds are in Detroit, Chicago, ATL, OH, and St. Louis primarily. There are a lot, like I said I'm not sure how my side fits in with all of them. I may need to talk to my great-auntie or great-uncle to see what they know.

could this first name have at one point, been a last name? My grandfather traced the family history once and I know of a plantation owner in the area named Squire or Squires where the family name was derived.

We even have a photo of a relative to my great grandfather that looks just like Mark Twain with all the white hair and beard except he was a shade darker. we believe it was a half brother. It was known fact that slaves were given their masters last names. When my dad was alive he got as far as the geneology and documents of Mr. Clemons which he was not allowed to see or investigate. I wonder why????

Don't know how far back ya'll are going but here is my input.

Foster - Union, Lauren, Reidville South Carolina as of about 1840's that I can trace so far. Reidville was where the Church Camp meetings were held.

Byrd - Union, Laurens, Reidville and the Branchville, Smoaks, and Orangeburg South Carolina. Branchville also held Church Camp meetings which is how the Fosters, Cooks and Byrds were linked. They linked through marriage late 1870's or so.

Cook - Reidville, Fountain Inn, Reidville South Carolina. Reidville on many of the census documents is also listed as Scuffletown. Scuffletown was rezoned, remapped somethin, into what is now called Simpsonville and or Fountain Inn. These are less than 10 miles from Reidville and about the same distance to Laurens area.

Kagler - So far I believe the name for the African decent started in Harleyville or Hardeville SC. There used to be a plantation there. I can't get my grandmother to tell me the story though. She just gets quiet on me. <_<

Aiken - Smoaks, Orangeburg and Branchville SC. Aiken is also Aikens and Aikan. Depending on the midwife the last name may have been misspelled. There are also some in New Jersey.

I don't think we are related but your post has some names & places that stick out to me so here we go.

My mother has first cousins with the name Gilmore in Chicago, do you know a Kay or Kenny? Their father's name is Jesse James, I believe, but everybody calls him Gilmore. He married my great aunt. Her maiden name was Lewis, and she was from Meridan, Ms. I'm her brother's (Walter) granddaughter.

My last name is Hall, I don't know about any Hall's in St. Louis, but my parents got divorced when I was 7 so I wouldn't. My dad is from Detroit, Mi. He's an only child, but his father was one of ten, I think. My Paternal Grandfather's name is Nathan. He died when my father was very young, so I as a result, know very little about the Hall's. Do you know anybody named Carlton or Dennis?

My parents met in Dallas, Tx, and lived there several years.

I didn't have time to read thru the whole thread, so if these names were mentioned already, get at me!!

Baylor: Maryland Baltimore city / Baltimore County

Brooks: Maryland Harford County

Dorman: Maryland, Eastern Shore and Harford and Balto. Counties. Two of my older cousins already started getting facts together from the Dorman side, apparently after the death of one of the cousins, the other cousin stopped. Very interesting story of how my family got from Eastern Shore to Baltimore. Dorman is the slave name that was given to us, they (cousins) even visited the Dorman plantation in Eastern Shore. A woman, my grandmother (many great, greats) was a free African American woman that married a German endentured servant on the Eastern Shore of MD. (Wouldn't we all like the details to that) lol. So if any of this is wringing a bell to anyone, please get at me.

I would like to continue where my cousins left off, which should be fairly easy (in comparison to some families) since my family has been in Maryland ever since arriving from Africa, but I don't live in Maryland anymore, so that is the difficult part....

I know Martin is a common name, but I don't know any that are relatives. There are Packs here in Cleveland, but I don't know them. I only know Sturdivants and not many.

I recently learned my father's father was "smuggled" out of Alabama in a coffin after killing a white man. Apparently the whole "Rosewood" thing was rather common. I think he later ended up in California; not sure. He died in the Midwest, though.

My maternal side traces our geneology starting with my great-grandfather, Nathan Flood of Bedford, Virginia.

Now, I'd really like more information on my paternal side. My great-grandmother was Rosa Hilton (Hylton) Dalton Hayes of Roanoke, Virginia. I got my maiden name from this lineage, but it has been family lore that we were never actually related to this name because it was a previous husband's name, not the actual father of my grandmother. Understand? Anyway...my great-uncle was James Dalton of Roanoke. He has a unique middle name that I have to go look up in my notes, which will help identify him. Anyway (again)...he spent some time in Baltimore after having served a couple of years in the Navy (during Korea, I think) and supposedly he had a wife and children WHO WE'VE NEVER KNOWN. So, it'd be helpful to find any Daltons from the Baltimore area who think they may have history in Virginia.

Napturallyme, my paternal great grandmother's maiden was name Mary Byrd from MS. She married a man named Joseph Rash (paternal great grandfather). Wow, the prospect of possibly finding relatives on here is exciting!

There are at least two different Byrd Families in Omaha. To my knowledge they are not related to one another.

Tons of Collins families in Omaha. My sister married into one of them. There's at least three separate bloodlines here that I know of, none of whom say the're related to one another. My sister's husband's family is huge.
----------------------------------------
My father or his family?
I know NOTHING about my father except his name. He and my mom never married. All I know is that his name was/is Jay Roy Milton. Spent time in Omaha in the early 60s. Could be from the Denver area. Supposedly went back to Denver before I was ever born.

Worked as a weldor at one time. I tried to find him back in the 90s but gave up.

Through my last job I learned a lot about Black ancestry in Southeastern Ohio and the Ohio River Valley. I catalogued videos of oral history of most of the Black families in the region. They know A LOT about their history and can trace back to tthe 1600s and can find relatives across America. Many can go back to Sally Hemmings. Most of these families largely have stayed in place and their history is powerful.

Minniefield - LA
Harper - LA
Crockett - LA (i think)
Arnwine - TN and OH
Adams - OH and AL (I think)
Ignot - LA
Williams - LA
[/b]

What part of OH are your Adams relatives from because this last name appears in SE Oh. One lady I know w/ the last name is a founding member of the MGC in Chesterhill, OH and she can trace herself to Sally Hemmings.

Newnan and Coweta Co. in general, Georgia - Leigh, Johnson, Berry, Brown, Moreland, Reese, Lett

Jefferson Co. Alabama - Lathem/Lathan, Baker, Turner, James

Mississippi - Sessor, Southerland, Fields, Windom

Prince George and Dinwiddie County, Virginia - Thornton, Hunt, Parham, Bonner, Baker, Tucker, Chapman/Chatman, Yates, McCoy

Rikki: you said you have family named Curley from Stony Creek? is that Stony Creek in Dinwiddie County? My family is related to some Curleys in the area by marriage. My great-great-grandmother's sister
Kitty Chapman married a Kersey/Carsey(?) Curley, they had nine kids and some of their descendants are still in touch with our family. And one of my great grandma's cousins, Pauline Mason, married a Robert Curley. Do you know if your family is connected with any of them?
[/b]

Most, if not all the Letts in America (at least the Black ones) are related (if I am remembering right) and they have a huge reunion in Zanesville, OH every year called the Lett Settlement Reunion. They are all over the country but many are in OH and a certain part of Michigan. If you are related to these Letts you are related to one of Ray Charles' daughters (and she performs music too). See if you can find any relatives that lived in Payne's Crossing (a free Black settlement in SE OH that lasted for a short period right around the Civil War, it's remnants are in Wayne National Forest and are currently being researched).

PM me if I can be of any help to either of you because if you are kin to any of these people they know a great deal of the history you may need.

eta: entire entry in bible, maybe it'll help someone else.

From a family bible originally given as a wedding gift in 1883 from Capt and Mrs. H.Y Gradick to Capt Y.L. Gradick and wife.

Written in ink is: "Follow this chart and it will lead you to the portal of bliss:.

1st entry, first marriage: Capt. F.L. Gradick to Anna M, eldest daughter to Mr. and Mrs. James A. Morrison, April 17, 1894.

2nd entry, 2nd marriage for Anna: John N. Gregg married to Anna M. Gradick, July 12, 1900 by Rev. E.N. Collings (difficult to decipher last name)

John N. Gregg died Feburary 24, 1909.

there are some in-law family members listed in this bible. many came from the south although i'm not 100% sure from what state.

Most, if not all moved to the northeast u.s. philadelphia and new jersey.

any help to you?

Fishburne is my grandmother's on my mother's side's maiden name. she married into the burnett's, she was one of 3 daughters. this grandmother was born in sumter, s.c.

--------------------------
and the following is what makes finding my true family line nearly impossible.

eta more to the confusion - my mother's mother (fishburne) is not a true blood relative. my grandfather and (adopted grandmom (fishburne) adopted the illegitimate child of his sister. i have no idea who my mother's real father is........my true blood grandmother (my mother's father's sister  ) has never revealed it, she is now 94 years old and has either deliberately forgotten the event or just refuses to supply information for whatever reasons.

btw, the same thing happened with my father's mother.

family secrets suck, truly.

[/b]

I know a woman with the last name of Chapman who's from Tennessee. I'm pretty sure one of my childhood friends' last name is Reese--can ask around if youd like. I know some Tuckers in Georgia and a Thornton in Georgia.

I forgot a name...so here we go again:

Batte: Virginia
Curley: Virginia
Neal: Georgia
Lane: Georgia/Indiana
Culpepper: Georgia
Cromerdie: Georgia
[/b]

I know of some Culpeppers in Georgia. Small word! Feel free to PM me.
