Hi, your hair is beautiful! Just enjoy the journey. every phase. wear them proud! My pic on here is about two months old but yesterday was my one year anniversary. will post picture soon. But going natural in general was the best thing I couldve done for myself. I LOVE my hair! and you will too. once you go through the budding and baby loc phase you will truly enjoy the adult, sprouting phase the most. Honestly I loved the shorter look alot but now that they are growing, OOOH WHEE! lol

Hello :o)

I started with comb coils and I'm in my 5th year of locking. If I can be of assistance to anyone in need of support/advice, feel free to PM me.

Things to keep in mind:

Hair in its natural state is not difficult to maintain. If you can remember...think back to the days when you first started combing your hair...I would think that like me, you had to experience a few things before you learned what worked best for you. It's the same with locks.

Patience is learned and you will find this to be true if you choose to endure the journey.

Don't be afraid to experiment.

When you find yourself feeling discouraged...look in the mirror and remember why you decided to lock.

Luna :D

Hi! Just wondering how long did it take for your hair to lock & how often did you get them maintained (before they locked)? I started mines 10/25/07 (comb coils), and a few in the back have just started to lock. I get them maintained every 4 weeks or so...eventhough my loctician recommends every 2-3 weeks. I like the messy look better & it's cheaper this way :D

Im with you!

I just started my locs 3/18/08...five days ago! I started with the comb coil method too. I hope I made the right choice however. I want mine to stay just smaller than the size of a pencil. It looks like it may be hard to do.

So far I have been having problems with the back coming unraveled, and the front locs coming unraveled and getting a little bigger than I want them.

If anyone has small locs that were started with the comb coil method please let me know. I am trying to see if I need to change to sisterlocks or interlocking in order to keep my size small.

Thanks!

hey tayluve: how are you? just to answer your questions--i started my locs with comb coil on january 4, 2008. i've been in for one maintenance round with my loctician two weeks after the initial coils, and i have been maintaining them myself every since. (it can get expensive going back and forth!) anyway, i do a full wash and retwist every two weeks, spritz every day with water and eo's and i have just started rinsing in between washes over the last week, about twice a week. seems to be working for me! hope this helps you...hugs and peace, janel

hello lexxdogg: welcome to locdom! i also started with comb coils (1/4/08). they will come unravelled--it's just part of the process. all you need to do is retwist as needed (just not too tight and retwist with damp hair!) if you are worried about your locs developing too large in size, you can always divide them; that's what i did to several of mine as they began filling out. hope this helps...hugs and peace, janel

heymay: what's up? how you doin'? everything is as it always is...busy! have a new folder in my fotki if you have time and are interested: month3. check it out. hugs and peace, janel

hey all! sorry, haven't been in for a minute--life keep taking over! LOL. all is as well as it can bee, heymay: congrats on month two--are you still lovin'it? i'm just about to enter my fifth month and i'm seeing crazy growth! have added a few new pics to the month 3 album, take a look if you wish. i am lovin' the full, look and am starting to think about not twisting new growth so often. do you are twist the entire length of the loc with a retwist or just the new growth? i like the looks of my "old" loc growth non-twisted--it more full and all. i've just discovered jasmine essential oil and have added it to my daily spritz---I LOVE THE SMELL!! keep moving my head all around just to smell it...

to whomever was asking about comb coils with gel: when i had my coils done, the loctitian used the infamous brown gel to hold the coils (yuck!) i wouldn't use a brown gel because it flaked, but i would use a clear gel to fashion and give some holding power to the coils. (sorry, i can't remember your name, but i hope this helps. gotta get in bed now, take care everyone and hugs and peace! janel

just realized that i didn't answer your other questions, heymay! yes, i maintain my hair myself and yes, i have been retwisting after every wash, but that may change. i rinse my hair 2-3 times a week and it really helps to keep the hair soft and flexible and clean and it keeps the itchies at bay. when i retwist, i use a little clear gel, jojoba oil and some eo's (lavendar, rosemary and now jasmine).

I just started my locs on 4/25/08 with comb coils. I have researched alot and have asked several people with locs advice and it is amazing the many different answers I receive. But the one piece of advice that has been consistent is to be patient and enjoy the journey. I do have a question though, I was told to wait at least 1 month before washing my hair, but to use witch hazel and a little on oil my scalp in the meantime. Did you all wait 1 month to wash your hair?

hi tpace! welcome to locdom. i agree with the consistent piece of advice: be patient and enjoy the journey. to answer your question about waiting a month to wash your hair: i didn't wait because my hair was a stinky mess after two weeks! i washed, even though my loctitian told me to wait for at least a month. i used a stocking cap, diluted my shampoo in a spray bottle with water and GENTLY lathered up my head through the cap and rinsed. did this three times, and had comparatively little unravelling. unravelling will happen, unless you are latching for maintenance and all you have to do it twist the hair back up. i was told to use seabreeze (an alcohol based astringent) on my scalp to clean it and all it did for me was dry out my hair and scalp. washing was a much better solution. AND, the seabreeze didn't seem to keep my hair and scalp clean for any great length of time. just my humble opinion. hope this helps, hugs and peace, janel

hi fellow loc'rs! just checking in with you all. how's it going? i've got update pics in my fotki--month 4 album--my locs are rockin'! they are really growing fast and the majority of them have begun to loc--i'm so excited!! last weekend was kentucky derby weekend here in the 'ville and i was at the motocycle races; saw A LOT of sistas and brothas with beautiful locs--one brotha in particular caught my eye--he was a PHINNNNEEEE piece of dark choc'late with locs half-way to his rear. y'all know i just had to ask if i could touch his hair (LOL) and it was fan-tabulous--soft and flowing and beautiful! 'course he wasn't too hard to look at either. anyway it was just amazing to see so many loc'd people in one place--i'm very proud to be among this group. one sista, whose locs i was admiring, looked at my little babies and said that she could tell that mine would be just as gorgeous in a couple of years. wow, what a compliment! hope you all are inspired--hugs and peace, janel

Do you ladies mind if a guy joins in the fun?
Started mine 12/30/2007 at a salon but 9 months in... even though they look good when done I learned so much here that i decided that they were not really helping me on my journey so decided to walk for myself so to speak.
I started comb coil also but palm roll now.

I started earlier this month w/ coils too. I am spraying daily w/ a spritz I read somewhere on here. My hair is moving through the process pretty fast. A friend of mine asked me to start her mothers. I started them yesterday :D . I will be maintaining them in the beginning for her and I'm excited!! I guess you can say Mrs. Lynn is my "loc buddy".

great to hear, especially the part about starting your friend's mom's hair. Even though I self maintain don't think I even got the confidence to help someone with theirs. Enjoy your journey.
