When I was a kid, my mom would thread our hair with strings from black pantyhose. We are American.
Check me out and let me know what you think.

(wish I knew how to insert a youtube video... sorry)
Also, I think that threading is called hair wrapping and done in this way http://www.flickr.com/photos/34908364@N06/3286113697/
and made with toys like this http://www.sz-wholesale.com/p/Cosmet...rap-19868.html. :-|
I may just get one of the toys and try it.:p
I think that I'm more interested in this than most, but I think this has potential, so I'll post just to keep a record.
It seems like hair wrapping/threading is now the white girls friend. I finally found lots of videos about hair wrapping and they are all white people doing it with brightly colored threads. Here is the most useful one that I found.

I really am interested in this. No Minaj but I want to experiment with a funky color this summer. Yeah, I know I've been coming down on the rainbow brights around the hood lately but that girl in the vid made the red thread look purty :)
There used to be a conair product called "Quick Wrap" that did this for you. They stopped producing it. I found a version for sale from a chinese company, but they only sell very large quantities :(
The first time I tried this, it was with sewing thread. It worked alright but I needed something more visible. I bought some yarn and tried it again 2 weeks ago. My problem is the ends. I fold the ends upwards, wrap the yarn around it then tie a knot, but a little bit of hair came out when undoing it today and when re-doing the knots a few times throughout the last week or so and I lost hair but also ripped some out because it snagged with the knot. I feel like I'm creating split ends.
I was wondering if there was a technique for protecting the ends or if anyone had advice? I've gotten the threading down except to that point and it seems like I'm acting out a lost cause since it's supposed to be a protective style.
You don't need to fold the ends up. Just keep threading all the way to the end. Then make a loop and pull the thread through for the knot with your last wind.
