Why do some people think its okay to just go up and touch your hair without asking
I've gone to predominantly white schools all my life (86% in my old school, and in my new school it's about the same.. but there's also a lot of indians so idk) and it's like.. sometimes people would just start feeling your hair from the back. Most of the time I have braids and this happens. I don't get why they feel like they can do this without asking. Usually it's people who are acquaintances, too. And then they're all smiling about it, and I'm like.. "er, okay". They think my hair is cool, but I don't see why they can't ask before touching my hair. It's not like I'd say no, but it's just nice to ask, you know? I'd never think of doing that to someone else, cause I'd just ask if somehow I felt the need to touch it. Is there anything I can do about this?

Folk just like doing that...
It's kind of like when you see someone scratch and sniff. We don't know why folks do it, but they do it...

Start smacking the back of their hands like my mom did me when I touched something I wasn't suppose. That'll be the end of that

It's because they don't like their fingers..
Or it could be they have no impulse control
Or it could just be that your hair is so fabulous it has hypnotic powers that forces those who dare look upon it, to grope it against their will.

Cos they have no home training, you are not a pet or exotic animal. Folks need to stop treating our hair as 'the other'. (rant over)

I remember being 11 or 12 before I started relaxing, and had a big fluffy afro. A white friend of mine would always and put her fingers through it, saying how it felt like a cloud or a pillow etc. I think some silky-haired people are surprised at how soft healthy black hair is in its natural state, as opposed to being rough & undesirable.
But when black people do it, it's either out of admiration or what a friend of my calls a "weave-check" - i.e. "black people don't have long or healthy hair so it must be fake, let me feel their scalp for tracks, just to be sure". SMH

Because its different from thiers. I have wanted to touch other peoples hair, but i woudnt even ask its rude, ignorant, and they might not want the attention. I mean sometimes if i have to i'll compliment it but i would never go further than that.

It's kinda like when you see a person walking their dog. If the dog looks sweet and cute, you might find yourself bending down, talking in "doggie talk", and petting their animal without permission. It's the idea that your hair kind of "invites" itself to be touched. I deal with it sometimes and it bothers me a bit, because some people rake their hands through it and it could break it off. Also, people's hands can be dirty. lol
