Default What's Your Opinion on Miss Celie Plaits as a Style

What's Your Opinion on Miss Celie Plaits?

My hair is sort of in Celies right now, but a bit smaller than usual. My hair is like this in preparation for my next protective style. (I need the stretch). I just got a new job that I start on Wednesday, and you can wear headcoverings if you'd like. So...I'm debating. I've been wearing them under a beanie...I don't know if I feel like putting in my twists yet.

It's such a convenient style (with hat), but tbh the thought of wearing my Celies out makes me I feel the same way about bantu knots. They're cute and all; just not sure how I'D look. I definitely wouldn't go out of the house with a bonnet on...I'm not about that "head-tied-up-in-public look".

I wear them to bed sometimes. When I first started wearing them at college, I was embarrassed to wear them out of my room to the dorm bathroom at night. Today, I'm more embarrassed by my earlier shame at my hair....but I'm still not going to rock them out on the streets. I just don't think I look attractive in them.

I was about to say "Nooo never leave the house with Celies".... Until I looked at the pic. My idea of Celies applies to short hair. I would rock your hair!

Don't like them. My mom usually has her hair in Celie braids under her wigs, I can't help but to see them as the equivalent of having rollers in your hair. Having said that, with hair as long as your OP, I probably would wear the braids as a French braid.

Cosigning MissChelle...those don't really count to me.

I have worn short fat plaits (for various reasons I won't go into I'm bothered by the term "Celie plaits") in the house, to bed, and occasionally hidden under a beret. Beyond that, IMHO, they look inappropriate on anyone over the age of 8. I feel the same way about pigtails on the sides (or bunny tails for the nappies). Not every style is appropriate for everybody in every situation.

I realized that I don't know what y'all mean by Celie braids. Are they fat plaits? Does it matter how long they are? 'Cause I sometimes wear my hair in 8 big braids and I've never even thought to cover them. I just pull them in a bun or ponytail . Don't tell me I've been wanted by the Natural Police this whole time.

ETA: Woah woah woah now. I just looked at the pics and now I'm confused. Isn't that African threading rather than Celie braids? That is not a style I've ever worn or would wear in public.

I haven't voted yet, I'll wait a bit. But yeah, I'd feel embarassed wearing it out in public....hmm..mine don't count? Lol.... I do see what you mean though. They are smaller and longer.

@AfroLand: Yes, thats African threading. But for me, I consider anything like chunky twists, chunky braids, any type of big plait as Celie =)

Oh, I know for sure I would NOT be rocking short Celies...it is interesting that ppl who have looooooong hair seem to get away with it...

@Karibana: I never thought of it like that, as the equivalent of rollers, but that does make sense!

@LBell: Now you have me intrigued as to ur views on the name of the style.....

i vote for bed and keep it in the house. Pull together a little updo or twist for that all important first impression.I always feel that if you have doubts about your hair it reflects in the eyes and others pick up on insecurities. The fact that you write this post is enough to say, not now at least for ..you..for me..that's my in house look.

Look into a variation like this for a protective style to get established on the job...hth! CONGRATULATIONS

I wore some out a few months ago and I didn't like it, lol. Luckily I was just traveling and was going to take them down the next morning. I've done it a few other times and actually got compliments...so weird. They're always pulled into a bun though. I never just wear them down.

Usually if they're really fat I'm not going to wear them without a headband or hat and then I pin them up in the back. I just don't like the look of them. Once they get smaller and start to increase in number then I think more about wearing them as is.

I voted for "It's all the same for me."

I think that most of the time Celie plaits are: for bed, like rollers, not fit for public observance. But if your hair is longish they can be totally cute in a bun or with an accessory.
