Thanks for posting, looks like an interesting book. I have a great uncle who passed back in the '20s. His white family didn't find out until long-lost black relatives came out to attend his funeral in the '80s.

My grandmother was very fair, her family used to joke that had she not married my brown skinned papa she could have had her a blond hair blue eye white man. She didn't find that very funny.
I plan to read this book. Very interesting. I think the part that got me was when the author stated she wasn't interested in what people gain by passing for white but what the LOST by not being black. That's so deep and it hurt when I read it...if that makes sense.
I so love being a black woman. Love it!~Never allow someone with limited vision to limit yours~

Have you read The Sweeter The Juice? One of the most interesting things about that memoir IMO was the juxtaposing of the lives of the people who stayed black and the ones who passed for white.
On my mother's side I have relatives who span the color gamut. I had at least one relative who passed for white but she only did it for work, if you can believe it. I wish I'd been able to ask her about it but I was just a kid when I met her and she died not too long after. Her mother was one of my great-great-grandmother's six biracial children. (I'm descended from one of the two monoracial children.) Not only did most of them marry darker-skinned blacks, they really, REALLY hated white people. And that puts me in mind of another book, The Black Notebooks, that had me thanking God for being "obviously" black.Hello, 2021. Glad to see you. Hope you're bringing us goodness and light this year!

Well some technically more European folks have been 'passing' for black for years so why was that ok? Why expect a white person with one black grandparent to be 'passing' for white they are more white?

I think some folks who passed had two "black" parents who were on the lighter skinned end of the spectrum. My grandmother's mother looked black to me and in the pics I saw (black and white of course) her husband did to. Out my grandmother's brothers and sisters (7 total) only her brother looked white.
In American history the one drop rule is ingrained (right or wrong) I think many people chose "black" even when they were more white for the love of family and culture as well as fear. Passing back in the day could get you killed if you were found out.~Never allow someone with limited vision to limit yours~

I love that movie. I cry like a baby at the end every time I watch it.
I will definitely read this book when it comes out. The story of the author's relative who refused to honor her father's dying wish and come home because her mother had forced her to pass really broke my heart.~Love the hair you have~
