Default Best way to start/DIY small locs?

Hey all. After a few years of being a loose natural, and loving it, I've decided that my journey has taken a new turn. I'm over it. I'm tired of being bothered with 20+inches of my loose natural hair. My lifestyle has changed as well. I've been extremely ill, started my M.S., and have a 40+ hour work schedule. I no longer have the time or health to realistically maintain my hair. I've always loved locs, but I promised myself that I would start locs when my hair was longer. So, now that I'm there, I'm overwhelmed by my locing choices! I would love to pay for the service, but I can't afford something like SL's, or even interlocks in my city. I do know that I want small locs, but I haven't found really good resources online to walk me through the process. Has anyone ever started their own set of small locs with success? What method did you use? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just got out of the hospital, and I have 2 weeks to get my hair together before I go back to work. So, even if the method is time consuming it won't be too much of a problem for me right now.

KnottyAuthor started her own small locs, so you may want to message her.

I also started my own locs, but they are not uniform or overly small. I started with braids, but if I were to do it again, I would do very small two strand twists.

The first person I actually KNEW with locs told me he started them by having his mother braid his hair, taking the braids out without a comb, and leaving the loosed braids alone. He had beautiful locs, and was the first person to ever get me truly thinking about starting my journey (don't tell him).

    Good luck!

Find a local braider who does microbraids. Leave the braids in and they will lock up over time. You can maintain the roots by twisting or latching.

Mine were started with small braids also. They are maintained by interlocking. It is a great way to lock IMO.

Thank you all for the advice. I had started micro twist, which I just finished this afternoon. I'm hoping i never have to do that again, but it looks like braids may be better. I think some of my hair is already unraveling. Ughhh.

I started my first set with micro braids, maintained by latching. Twos trands may unravel a lot when wet and or bunch, so make sure to braid/bundle when you wash.

Thank you for that advice. I wanted to show you guys how they look now that they're about 1 week old, and right after I washed them. So far, no unraveling. But, the frizz has come already. I have extremely frizzy hair so I expected that anyway, but I do wonder when my hair will lose it's curly texture.

They look cute! They will probably begin to shrink like magic with every wash and may or may not lose the curls at the ends.

Cute!! Be sure to take the other poster's advice and braid/bundle and band when you wash. That will keep them from unraveling too much and prevent a lot of bunching as your locks progress.

This lady is explaining the process on sisterlocks, but the general idea is the same no matter how you start.

Thank you Lockolatte, and skittles04 for finding that video. I did braid my hair before washing. It's crazy frizzy. I may try to interlock them by hand and with a yarn needle, but it seems like so much work. And, it seems like the huge amount of frizz my hair generates is helping to create that hair mesh that will turn them into locs. So, I'm wondering if I need to just excercise some patience or go ahead and attempt the slow process of interlocking them. I'm a little scared by what Lockolatte said about them maybe staying curly. Is that normal or is it because of their size?
