Do water and shea butter mix?
I'm thinking of trying a new recipe, but I'm not sure if I can mix water with shea butter? I've gotten water in my shealoe mixes before and it was not a good look. (Green & moldy)
I recently bought this lotion for my daughter and it is so creamy and lush. I have been tempted to use it on my hair. I notice the first ingredient is water, so I'm wondering how this is possible for this to keep and not get all green and moldy.
Ingredients: Purified Water; organic herbal extracts of Chamomile, Calendula (Marigold), and Comfrey; Vegetable Glycerine; Shea Butter; Coconut Butter; Soy Extract; Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A); Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C); Tocopherol (Vitamin E); Phenoxytol (Green Tea); Grapefruit Seed Extract (preservative)

it doesn't get all green and moldy because they use a preservative. grapefruit seed extract. phenoytol is just green tea extract. if you mix water and oil, you need to use a preservative otherwise it will grow mold pretty soon if not used up.
i don't see an emulsifier either...maybe they forgot to put it in the ingredients list? there is a water soluble shea butter, but there are other things that are not water soluble in the ingredients list, so I dont know how they didn't use an emulsifier

Water and oil/fat do not easily bind together so an emulsifier is used to bind these to create a cream/lotion.
Here is a good explanation[SIZE=2]Akua

soy lecithin is an emulsifier. soy extract is listed in the ingredients. Maybe that's another word for it? There MUST be an emulsifier in this product. Water and oil do not mix, period.

soy lecithin only goes by that name. soy extract would not be an emulsifier...I'm confused with this product list sans emulsifier...
