    Unhappy

My mom after going natural (locs) soon after started my sister being natural. My sis has never had a r.e.laxer but a t.exturizer. Well my mom realized the damaging effects and decided to stop putting it in her hair. So my mom kept her her in braid extensions and when she looosed them out she would cut out some of the text ends. Well my sis seems to hate having her natural hair out. She always wants my mom to put in extensions. I dont know if its a matter of length or look but she doesnt like it. I dont know why maybe its the media or the predominately white schools she goes 2. My mom recently decided that she would stop putting extensions in her hair all the time and have my sis wear her hair. So when my mom proceeded to put chinese bumps (bantu knots) im sis hair she got upset. My mom isnt really that compassionate  so i had to encourage my sis that her hair was really cute and she with 2 puffs at the top. Shes a very pretty girl in general but she has some hair issues. I hope she can find the beauty in her hair regardless of length or texture in time.

Awwww... what's her face shape like? Got any pictures?
There's a myriad of styles out there, and I'm sure there's one that she'll like.

Hopefully she can, How old is she? It's very hard sometimes looking at mainstream tv and seeing beyonce with hair to her waist looking hot and then going to school with silky haired girls.

I would have never worn natural hair in hs. I wanted it as straight as possible. Thats all that was around me, shoot I would have taken curly hair over my naps any day. little did i know my natural hair was curly already.

One day she might come into her own and realize it is beautiful

Aww. I know how she feels. My little sis has problems with wearing her nappy hair too to school. She said when we put her her in twists the other kids made fun of her. (But she's a tough girl so it didn't bother her too much she just made fun of them right back)

However, she's always talking about how long or how straight the other girl's hair is and how it's so long. (for some reason her hair isn't retaining length very well like when she was younger) I keep telling her it's because she does way too much to her hair. I've tried to tell my mom too. But it's either look cool to fit in or look odd and get picked on. (This is Miami so kids are much more cruel than where I grew up in north FL.)

What's even sadder is that these kids are so concentrated on how they look and couldn't care less about performing well in school. It's actually quite sad.

I hope your sister grows to love her natural hair - I'm still fighting that battle with my own daughter. Well, fighting isn't the right word...I keep encouraging her to wear her hair natural (she's got really thick hair, just above her shoulders) and she prefers wigs or sew-in weave to wearing her natural hair. She is still in high school, and her best friend is practically a weave-o-logist!

The best friend constantly changes up her weaves and hairpieces - her mom spends a TON on hair stuff - and I think it makes my daughter a little jealous. Plus, my baby girl is on the heavy side (she takes after her momma) and she's not happy with her shape right now, so she compensates with hair.

I'll just keep lovin' her - cause I can't do it any other way  and I hope that someday she'll come back to the naps  I'll just keep setting the example and hopefully soon she'll one day adopt a BAA instead of the weave!

I hope the youngins in you all's life will grow to like their natural hair.

What's weird is that in some number of years they'll look back on all of this and realize they are much stronger women because of it and that being different is a GREAT thing.

    @ sonofgod,

Your a good brother. I commend you for supporting her at this time and trying to help her through it. She will look back one day and thank you (maybe when you all are much, much older )

You are right about too much being done to your sisters hair as one of the causes of her not retaining length. How old is she? Maybe if you introduce her to this site and she becomes involved and see all the possibilities for styling her natural hair, she may be open to trying new things.

I have a 13 year old who is in a very culturally diverse school. She went through a phase where she wanted to start str8tning her hair and began to envy the girls with str8t hair. She has a head full of beautiful nappy hair that is very healthy and long. I encouraged her to be a leader and not a following as I always do. I constantly tell her how beautiful and special her natural hair is. I encourage her to embrace what God has blessed her with and help her to try different styles that she thinks are cute. I am always pointing out woman with beautiful nappy hair in the entertainment industry and on the TV, so she sees that not every one has to have str8t hair and nappy hair is just as beautiful if not more...

It has been a task, but she has gotten past the point of envying str8t hair and has begun to luv her natural hair again. All you can do is be there for her, encourage and support her and provide info. Don't stop telling her how pretty you think natrual hair is. Maybe it will sink in one day soon.

...being different is a GREAT thing.

    Amen to that!!!
