I Now Understand What "good Hair" And "bad Hair" Really Mean

I was just thinking to myself today about what are the real reasons some reject kinky hair. I concluded that it has less to do about race and more to do with our jiffy-pop way of thinking as a society. Kinky hair takes time and paitence which many do not have today. Kinky hair represents the past and people dont often connect it to being"modern" . And I think women of all races straighten their hair because its easier and faster. People no matter the race do not like to stand out, I have observed this as a designer that the majority of the population would prefer to blend in. Straighter is easier to assimilate to as most cultures in the world do not have tightly kinked hair like we do. And when it sometimes hurts to comb, or you see broken pieces of hair everywhere or you have to try keep your hair practically damp all the time to prevent it from breaking, when others seemingly have it so "easy", it can leave you with a "bad" feeling. I love my hair but through becoming natural for the 1st time in my life I understand the joys and the pains that maybe my Mom tried to avoid when she introduced me to the creamy crack as a child.

That's what I think as well: most people are conformists. And they should be. Makes me look even more interesting in comparison.

It only hurts to comb if you aren't going it right.

I think folks think they have to "do" something to nappy hair to make it look good, but since straight hair is the norm, it usually doesn't matter what the condition is and doesn't neccessarily have to be "done" to look acceptable.

So, LP, your theory might be right.

Yeah thanks, Im definitely the only napptural as Im also the only African American. At my old job there was a girl with locs though. So I know what you mean about standing out.

You have an interesting perspective. I agree with you to a point but I also think it has to do with the way nappy hair feels and looks. Hypothetically speaking, if nappy could be combed as easy as straight hair some would still straighten their hair. For example my mom's concerns with going natural don't have to do with how easy she could be able to comb her hair or not but that she would only wear twistouts because then her hair would look "styled" and "neat".

I know that's why they're excuses lol she'll say anything to defend her permed hair but her excuses always revolve around how she doesn't like the way nappy hair looks

I agree with you to a certain extent as well. I also think that since we are the only race (for the most part, there are some Jews) with kinky/nappy/tightly curled hair, it then becomes a racial ordeal.

But that's just how society is so :dunno:

At least I get to stand out from the crowd ^_^
