OK y'all, I'm a Florida girl, never been in really cold weather nor snow. We'll be going to DC for the inaugural festivities and I wanna be sure I take the right stuff, not too much. I already have a wool coat from the time I went to NY in November, about 15 years ago. The weather only got to the 40s though.
Also have long johns, wool mittens, scarf and a beret from that time too. Is there anything else I might need? Got some jeans, sweaters, ankle boots, hoodies and my New Balance athletic shoes. I just want to be protected from the weather, not stuck in a hotel room.

I'm in DC and today its cold. I would dress in layers, if you're going to be outside alot. Especially downtown area, It's kinda breezy down there.

OK, but exactly what does that mean? Put on longjohns, then t-shirt, then top, then coat? How much layering is too much 'cause I don't want to be sweating all under the layers?

I would definitely wear clothes in layers. Meaning, a long sleeve shirt under a sweater. Cute but thick pair of jeans (don't wear some thinned out jeans). Oh and definitely wear a coat not a jacket, but a coat.

ETA: Oh yeah, you might want to bring hat, gloves, and scarf just in case. It will be January here. HTH

I'm in the DC area as well...and yes that sounds about right....today it was mid 40's, but NYE night the temp was 19 degrees with a windchill of like 12 or so. I'm a Florida girl too... and I still haven't adjusted to the cold weather...

I'd say pack those long johns, some long sleeve t's if you have some, a couple sweaters....you can always peel some of that stuff off if you get too warm....but whatcha' gone do if you don't wear it...and you get too cold? lol

It's always freezing in DC during a Presidential Inaugural (I've been to four.....2 Clintons and 2 Bush's). It's gonna be cold out there on the Mall. Really cold! Especially if you're used to warmer weather. It may even snow/rain.

Most definitely layer. I would go to Target and buy a pair of pants 2 sizes above what you normally wear, and use them for the top layer. Then a slightly less baggy pair of pants under that. Then a more fitted pair of leggings as the first layer. Longjohns/thermal underwear are a good idea, if they are comfortable.

Your top layer, IMO, should be layered, but not bulky. If you take 2 or 3 long-sleeved shirts, and then a non-bulky sweater as the top layer, you should be fine with a coat.

The most important pieces to your outfit is WALKING SHOES. Folks always suffer because there's so much walking involved, and there's going to be an huge blocked-off perimeter with limited automobile access. I would wear sneakers............Get ready to travel on foot for a couple of miles. I'm serious.

The key is to be comfortable, warm, and mobile.

Oh yeah....Get a backpack or sling, and carry food/snacks/drink around on the Mall. If there are vendors, the lines are going to be incredibly long.......

One more thing, should I be overdosing on Vitamin C now? I hate having colds and don't wanna come back with one.

I used to live in the DC area and I agree with Jazi. Dress in layers. Don't wear a big sweater and a big coat. Wear several lightweight tops/sweaters and keep your face covered. You won't catch a cold if you're covered up well.

Meh. I'm having second thoughts about going. The traffic and crowds.
Quit tripping on what you're wearing on your behind and get some education in your head.
