Hey gang, well Im out here in Houston, TX with this 100-something degree weather. My hair HATES heat and will not retain moisture from any conditioners so I have decided to put it up for the rest of the summer. I refuse to put weave in my head though because I could not imagine my scalp not breathing in this hellish heat. Just needed some suggestions on what kind of hair I could use for some braid extensions? i do not plan to flatten my hair or straighten in any way prior to getting the braids so I know nothing synthetic fiber (toyokalon, kanekalon, etc) will look good and I can't afford any human hair right now. Anyone have any suggestions on the type of hair I could get? Hope to hear from u!

If you want your scalp to get air and breathe, I would recommend that you do braids or twists with your own hair, no extensions. I looked at your fotki and its definitely long enough and they can last for weeks. In my experience, due to the bulk of the hair with extensions, your scalp doesn't get much air and they can be hot.

^^ I agree. Plus, you can make a spritz with a humectant (some options are honey, aloe vera, and glycerin with a light oil, conditioner, and or water) for your thirsty hair and scalp while in the braids or twists.

When I used to wear braid extensions, I would use kanekalon or very curly human hair. My napps blended in well and it was kinda cute. I have pictures under "Transitioning" in my fotki. HTH!

Hey well I guess I didn't explain myself enough in the beginning so sorry about that. Well, I have been wearing my own in 2-strand twists since June. I also wore a twistout for a little bit. However, I do alot of work outside for most of the day. All the moisturizers I have made and bought do little to nothing. I have spent lots of money on these little oils and conditioners and Im not going to do that anymore and Im also not going to allow my hair to suffer through this 100 degree weather and 100% humidity any longer. So that is why I am getting the braid extensions because no matter how I wear my hair or what I put in it, it is going to continue to break and to feel like straw.

To above poster, when you wore the kanekalon hair, did the hair ever break through the braids if u ever got it wet? cause kinky and kanekalon almost don't even mix. my hair is ultra thick and easily comes thru braids.

what's your products like? oils and conditioners are of no use if your hair doesn't like them..

how often do you use just plain old water and maybe a little humectant like glycerin and aloe?

if you're having dryness problems, extensions will make it worse so if you must do braids, just use your own hair
