I am a newbie. I got my locs {comb coils} done June 22, 2009 so it is not even a month yet. My questions to the vets are as follows:
    1. Do you use Mango and Lime Products? I love the way it smells and I realli want to use these products but do you recommend them?
    2. How long should I wait to do my own hair {i.e. washing and retwisting}? I am currentli going to the loctitian!
    3. Should I "shop around" or use one brand of products?
    4. How long did it take you for you to be able to shake your hair?
    5. Do you have any tutorials on loc styles?
    6. How do you get your locs small? I don't want my locs thick I want it small-medium!

Your responses will be greatli appreactiated! If you have any other information that newbies need to know PLEASE do not hestitate to inform me.

    Thank You,

Im not a loc vet (had locs for a about a year), but most of the info that I know about locs comes from reading this forum. Many of the same questions you have, many have asked them before. Just scroll through and there's an abundance... trust me. But I can try to answer some of your questions, because I know on here you can have an info overload.

1)I know the ladies on here all use many different things to retwist their hair, some use no product at all--just water.

2)You should do your own hair when you are comfortable with doing it yourself.

3)As far as products, just make sure you use something that does not cause build up, which means it must have water as a main ingredient. If it doesnt, then later on once your locs start growing out you may begin to notice your locs look ashy-- which is the build up.

4)LOL @ the 4th question! I guess it all depends on the length of the hair.

5)You can check out the abundance of fotki albums on loc tyles AND YouTube has much to over with styling tutorials. Check both out!

6)From your avatar, your locs dont look like they will be very thick. They look like they'll be a small to medium (maybe pencil size) once they mature. But you do have to factor in the actual thickness of YOUR hair to begin with. You really won't know until they start to grow out.

I hope that I have helped in some way Good luck on your loc journey. I'll be joining the gang (again) very soon!

Yay!!! Congrats on your loc journey!!!! Def. keep us posted on your progress!!

1, I use JML, the cactus and itch spray. Like so many on these threads, they did change their formula. The new formula was way too sticky and caused much buildup. I did find the old formula at a store, so I use that sparingly. I also use Paul Mitchell clarifying shampoo or 3 in 1.

2, I do both. I go to a loctician and latch myself. I waited until my hair was loced to start latching myself. The only reason I did this was b/c latching was new to me. But many on here have started locs on their own and they are beautiful!!!!!

3, Hahahahaha, There is a whole thread about "shaking hair." I started with two inches and a year later I can shake mine. But hair growth is different for everyone.

4, There are lots of tutorials on loc styles, just search the threads. You can find everything about styling, curling, corporate styles, etc. Also, some of the members have "how to," on youtube.

5, If you have a loctician and she is going to start your locs, I would tell her the size that you want. I told my loctician that I wanted medium locs. My nappyloc tool is medium.

    Hope this helps!!!!
