Default O-oooo! Rock Doc in da house!

Many of you may not remember me but I used to post a lot more a couple years back. I wanted to share my story with my NP sisters, many of whom encouraged me when I was feeling challenged by my program.

So I started my PhD program in August 2005. I defended my dissertation in Dec 2008 and it was a disaster. Only my supervisor had read my dissertation prior to showing up, none of the other 4 committee members had. I contacted them before the defense and asked if there were any specific issues they'd had that they'd like me to address *crickets*.

My supervisor said that my defense was especially hard. My committee requested extensive revisions before they would agree to sign off on it. I completely gutted and retooled 2 major chapters last November and then I started working and the crushing sense of failure immobilized me. I worked on it slowly and one night in June I broke down and sent what I had- the retooled, gutted half shiny and new, half tattered and broken work to my supervisor. She was brutal with her corrections but it gave me a starting point. I completed those and sent it out to committee but I still had one hard azz left to convince.

Well I finally did that from September through November- doing 2 additional rounds of corrections for him. I finally got a note from him saying that he was satisfied and that he would sign off on my paperwork.

Two days ago at 5:30 am my husband and I left Houston and drove to Austin. I acquired all of the required signatures from my committee members, uploaded the dissertation and had it assessed by the degree evaluator. I sat on pins and needles as she went down her checklist - she didn't speak, she frowned occasionally- striking fear into my heart. The only sound in the office was the loud tick-tick of her clock and the pounding of my heart. She looked through the dissertation for formatting and found one small issue that she said was not a big deal and then said that my submission had been accepted by the Graduate School.

So finally I am a doc! It took me long enough phew!

I know I wrote a lot but I wanted to share some of my lowest points so that maybe they can serve as inspiration for someone. There is light at the end of the tunnel you just have to slog through it. I'm not going to say it won't suck because it will but in the end you'll be glad you did it instead of giving up.

Having a good support network is also important. There was a time during the gutting, purging and massive rewrite that I would literally weep before I started working on it. DH would rub my back and tell me that it would be ok and that once I got started it wouldn't be that bad. So through the tears, the destroyed ego and the mental anguish I managed to emerge triumphant!

For all you ladies fighting the good fight in school stay strong- it is worth it!

I wondered where you'd gone. It's good to see you checking back in. It's always inspiring to know how someone else got through their hurdles. Glad to see that you got through your challenges.
