    I wish I'd had this information back when I first started noticing the mildew smell in my locs. No matter what I tried, I was never able to get rid of it completely. I'm no longer locked but thank you for posting this; you may have saved some heads of locs!

    Where would I find that Paul Mitchell's Three mentioned in the first post, and how much is it?

    Thanks so much for sharing your testimonial with us. This explains a lot because I've actually never had any of the issues you've described because I've always used a clarifying shampoo. Funny that over the winter I purchased a moisturizing shampoo because where I live it snows and the elements are so, so harsh but even that was the first time that I did that.

    The unusual drying that I have been experiencing has a lot to do with just me and my body period. I've been a bit stressed lately, not drinking enough water. Eating all kinds of crazy stuff I shouldn't. I'm just not taking good care of the inside and so instead of o.d.'ing on products and looking for a quick repair I'm trying to take better care of the inside and work that route.

    This has got to be the best post that I've read in the loc board. So informative, I am going to buy that Paul Mitchell shampoo next week. I thought that if I smelled my hair and it smelled like whatever shampoo orconditioner that I was using that it was a good thing- boy am I ever wrong. So from now on, I will take the extra time to thoroughly wash out my hair.

    @Debe - What is a shower hose?

    @LBellatrix - Yeah I'm sure that others have faced this or will so I definitely wanted to share. Info on it is scarce and I don't think that people have a true understanding of all that causes build up.

    @Exotica - A bottle lasts me forever. Think I've bought like 2 since having locs because I dilute the shampoo with water at a 1:1 ratio. I think that it's like 11 or 12 bucks for a good year of usage with diluting. You can get it from salons mostly. I usually just see one in the mall or something and see if they have it.

    Happy to help ladies

    Good info. Thanks.

    I'm almost four years in and love love love clean smelling hair with a hint of strawberries or whatever, lol. I wash often, condition often and clarify at least once a month but sometimes more.

    I use my microfiber and/or sham wow towels to dry and my hair is usually dry in a few hours. I think I'm okay but I'll start really paying attention.

    Thanks again.
