Default How do you protect your hair from the sun?

I need to get together a strategy for the warm months. I spend a lot of time outside (at playgrounds, riding my bike and such) and although I wear sunscreen & shades, I don't do anything for my hair. I'm twisting & bunning but do I also need to wear a scarf or hat on my head as well? Like everyday?

I need to look cute out there while protecting my tresses. Please tell me what your strategy is.

I wear scarves alot to protect my hair from the elements and myself. (I have chronic HIH disease) They are only $3 at the BSP and come in lots of colors. Color coordinate and add some earrings so it looks purposeful rather than like you just rolled out of bed.

I don't really do anything to my hair in the summer (I don't spend much time outdoors). If I know I'll be outside then I'll wear a hat mainly to protect my face. I suggest that you wear your hair in a protective style to make wearing hats doable. I don't know about you, but I couldn't get a hat over my loose hair if someone paid me $1 million.

Pretty scarves and a hat. And, like Lonnice Bonner said in her book, Good Hair, some baaaaaad ear rings!

I put my hair in two braids and slap on a sun hat. When going to the beach, I'll apply conditioner before hand and leave it in. I'll rinse with clean water when I get out of the ocean.

I'm not sure I understand the need to protect hair from sun since I live in the desert and have never had problems.

Would someone please explain this to me?

Please don't throw tomatoes at me, but my question is why do you have to do anything extraordinarily different than you have in the past? Having read your past posts and responses it seems as though you take very good care of your tresses already. Our bodies need the sun. Sure you might need to take a little more precaution with sunscreen on skin but I wouldn't think too much. One poster suggested shea butter as a natural sunscreen. Why not use that and call it a day? I think your hair will be just fine.

Hmmm... I never thought about it. I do have a random loc that's brown. Never dyed my hair. I have no idea what to think about it. Should I wear hats now?

I don't know about your hair, but my hair used to get fried after a day out in the sun. The sun really does make my hair very dry!!

I didn't know shea butter was a sun protectant!
