    Question Henna Relaxes Hair

mymy: Henna doesn't really dye the hair red, but rather gives it red highlights, relaxes the hair and makes it silky. Body art quality henna will rinse out of locks, braids, and curls, and can be used over relaxed hair.

I pulled up this quote from a 2007 post about Henna. For those who have used henna many times before, what are your hair results? Has henna loosened your curl?

I am interested in using henna, bt I'd rather not chance it if my curls will become altered permanently. Thank u for your confirmations in advance.

My hair was as tight as ever after using henna. I think for some it may loosen the curl pattern until the next washing.

    no texture changes.

it conditions the hair, maybe that's what mymy meant...

my hair texture loosens however to combat it , i add amla and other extra moisturizing ingredients in there to combat it.

it is temporary and not something that stays after washing , henna binds to the keratin in the hair shaft appearing to weigh the hair down, which for some whos hair is easily weighed down it appears to loosen drastically

It loosened mine. It also deepened the color of my already copper colored hair. I put it on my hair after washing with my castile soap. My hair was unbelievably soft after the henna treatment. I don't use henna for highlights but for deep conditioning. I put saran wrap on my head after applying the henna and let my body heat work it. I left it on for about 4 hours but you can leave it on overnight. The longer the better. When I rinsed, I noticed my curls were loosened, but it was not permanent. They coiled right back up after a few days. LOL

i haven't found that henna "loosens by curls" any more than any other deep conditioning treatment. My hair does hang longer with the henna in it, but once it's rinsed off, I shrink right back.

Henna permanently altered my texture after using it monthly for a year. When I stopped there was a noticeable difference in my new growth and my hennaed hair after several months. I eneded up spending another year trimming the henna away.
