Since you plan to visit a loctician, just tell the person you want thick locs. Let the person do maybe three and see if that's the size you want. If it is, then continue from there.
I wouldn't worry too much about the number of locs, because the same number can look different on different people.

To some degree the amount of locz does matter. I mean I have some what thick locz...but I only have 84 +/-. However, if I had...say 200...my locz wouldn't be as thick. Again...however, keep in mind (like Exotica said)...what 84 looks on me...may not look the same on you. So definitely tell the loctician that you want thick locz. She/he should take a look at your hair's texture and be able to determine around about how many you should have to obtain the desired look. Just remember, when it comes to locz...anything can happen....
Good luck....Thank you, Jah!!!! Thank you!!!!
I updated my picture album here on NP ya'll. Year 4! What a blessing to be a loc sistah!

^^what she said. I have like 61 dreads, I would consider them thick, but hair texture has a lot to do with it. I would consider your texture and look at dreads that are thick with similiar texture. If you can, ask that person how many dreads they have. Hope this was of some assistance and happy locing

Definitely texture and hair density play a role.

cuz im here looking at other ppls here saying...i want the exact look. but its just like hair regimens....i shudnt try to copy other ppl but work on myself....thanx u guys...
i kno this is off topic from my original intent of this thread...but i would like to kno...what products you guys used when u first started ur dreads...n what products do u use to maintain them?
i wanted to learn more about dreads so i went to a thread that gave certain links to information about dreads, including the stages, budding, all that. but when i click the link, it only takes me back to the main forum...i would really like to learn about the stage of my dreads so i was wondering if anyone had any links to information about the stages of dreads and budding?http://images.meez.com/user/3/5/7/8/...ot_175x233.gif

I agree with Himmy and Exotica. I have thick locs, and I only have about 88. But, my head is a size XL and I have always had super thick hair.

I have locs that are about the size of the first pic. Because I have a big head and a soft texture, I know that what my loctician did for my hair would come out totally different on someone else's head. I have 73 locs.
Most def take those pics to the loctician and if he/she knows what they are doing then you should be fine. Just know your locs will thicken as the process goes on. My locs just about doubled in size from when they were installed.
Well, I pretty much have always used Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera gel to retighten my hair. I have recently switched to Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera gel. I have always been a product minimalist and try to use as many natural products as I can. But just know that hair will loc even if you don't use anything on it. Because my hair is dry, I am going to start using Jamaican black castor oil mixed in with the gel because I have heard such great things about it.
As far as what I use to moisturize, I use Frank Juice and mixed with Honey Water and both those products come from Oyin Handmade.
You can check out the stages of locing here:
http://naturalhairbeauty.blogspot.co...ve-stages.html
And you may also want to get the book Nice Dreads (shown on that link on the right side), I bought it before I had my locs installed and it helped me understand a lot.
Good luck!God Bless!
