Nuh Uhhhh...Essence video, Why I love "my" hair
Yes, I'm bored on a Friday night.
So bored that I'm on Essence's blog where I came across a video entitled, "
Shake Your Beauty: Why We Love Our Hair"
Here's the link:
http://www.essence.com/hair/shake_yo...e_our_hair.php
Now, it said she was going to be interviewing black women in NYC streets and asking them why we love our hair. I expected to see a range of styles including both straight and natural hair. Did I see natural hair? No!
But what is even more mind boggling, are the responses many of them gave.
Watch and shake your head.

Thanks for that. It was enlightening. And that was a hot, mucky mess! That girl with the glasses kept saying "because it's natural!" There was nothing natural about her hair. None of these women had natural hair but "natural" and "versatile" kept coming up in their answers. Weave and perms are not natural. Somebody needs to school these girls and the beauty editor! I feel just as cheated now listening to this as I was when I got my first relaxer at 14 years old. But I guess that's the mentality that has been etched in our brains since were little about relaxers and how good they are for our hair. Ugh!!!

I'm not really offended. The only off the wall thing I saw was the girl who said she relaxes every two weeks. Wow!
But uh, with the chicks saying they are natural, even though they have a relaxer in their hair...before I went natural and got involved with the online hair world, I too considered my nonweaved up hair "natural." Natural hair as we know it did not exist in my little world so wearing your real hair with chemicals=your natural hair. I don't fault them, it is just ignorance and being misinformed.

They all kept saying what most naturally straight haired women can say...they can put weave in it, wear it curly, color it, add pieces...that entire piece made no sense, I'm like shaking my head the whole time.

This entire video was an embarrassment. Some of those women had hair that looked badly damaged. Especially the girl with the blond bangs! She said her hair is versatile and that it doesnt break off easily! She is terribly misinformed.
