Thanks for this thread Napia. I am keeping my hair covered @98% of the time while outside. Went to a party last night so I wore my hair out but as soon as I came home I took care of my babies. It is very cold here in Chgo so I moisturize/satin scarf/hat constantly. Years ago when I was natural I never covered my hair and it did suffer for it-I couldn't understand why it wasn't growing.
@JaeFuma: Cold weather zaps moisture from your hair/when your ends are subjected to extreme weather, they do get damaged. This is why many naturals living in cold climates take this time of year to wear protective styles for these months. Of course, you are in control of your hair and there is no "requirement" written anywhere for what you do with your own hair.Last edited by lin19lyn; 12-20-2010 at 12:17 AM.

Yes you can keep your hair out but like every thing you have to pay attention to your hair and act accordingly. By default my head is covered because our temps up here are sub freezing in winter but I have gone around with noting but earmuffs last winter and the previous one because I didn't want to smoosh the fro or puff. My hair, and that of a few others who posted in a previous winter hair thread, didn't suffer any adverse consequence and it's been the same this week when I didn't bother with my hat a couple of times.

Yes, I keep my hair covered. I don't want to take a chance.

I used large scarves to protect when I wasnt able to find a hat big enough to cover my melonhead and thick hair. I decided to get some Rasta tams last year from eBay and they have been wonderful. Now that I'm locing, I can wear some berets as well. I just take care to make sure my hairline is well-moisturized and oiled for its protection.

I don't cover my hair that often because it doesn't get really cold here. On those days when it is, I cover my head only to stay warm. I don't notice that my hair suffers in the winter.
If I lived up north, then I'm sure I would cover my head and probably line some of my hats to protect my hair."If you want longer hair you need to live by your ends, and die by your ends. They are all that matter." -mymy

This is my first winter being natural, and Im glad to have read this post. I usually wear scarves because the cold air gives me such terrible headaches in the winter. I usually wear a scarf and a hat to keep warm but Im glad to know its needed to protect my hair.

I do believe in hats for winter but what if it never goes below 40 degrees where you live? Do you have to wear hats every day? The monotony is startling. I know you can take them off inside but if you're like me you have to get your hair situated before you leave home. And I hate hat hair.
