Great thread for newbies.
Exactly what I was thinking as I read the thread. Reading the good advice and warnings during my loc research had me ready like Freddy, so there were no mistakes. (I was ready for my hair to show length before it did, but I was prepared for that.) This is why I love and subscribe to NP. The ladies and information here are priceless!Last edited by AuNappturale; 09-10-2011 at 10:04 AM.

Do not use a spray to moisturise/oil hair, most of it gets lost in the atmosphere and not on the locs so pour in hand then rub on locs instead.

I'm a PJ in recovery (sort of)...
Learning that less is more--for me anyway.
If moisturization is the goal, to use plain water.
For me to retain said moisture (after misting with water, massage in castor oil or jojoba oil (or a mix of the two) with no more than 3 EOs for scent (Lavender, Ylang Ylang and Jasmine) or no EOs at all and 1 commerically blended natural hair oil (and very little because it's just for scent)...but that's it! Apply the oils at night before bed so that most of it is absorbed over night. Spritz with water in the morning.
That Peppermint EO is not for me (the tingle on my scalp that I used to feel, has progressed to feeling like a burn). Fortunately, I did not harm my scalp.
Low maintenance does not mean neglect. If I get too lazy, my hair will let me know immediately. This second set of locs is really temperamental.Yes, I can.

If you aren't going to see a loctician regularly, make sure you pay attention to your hair. Don't be lazy, realize your root system is a bed of knots, then painfully pull your locs apart. Never again. Monthly re twisting for me.
Just as hate knows love's the cure, you can rest your mind assured, that I'll be lovin' you always.

Wait, so coconut oil is bad for your locs? Uh-oh. I've been using pure coco oil for years now. And I have a full row of hair that I combined to a mature loc by just braiding it in. Is that wrong? Yikes.

i'm sisterlocking now but in my first set of locs that were almost 6 years old, long, healthy and beautiful but i cut bangs (bored and felt like i needed something to liven them up). i would not recommend bangs for locs. in hindsight, i would pin and/or style locs to create the illusion of bands and leave it at that. once i cut the bangs i became really discontent with my hair. it was the beginning of the end and i eventually cut them off.

Does it really matter if all of the sections aren't perfect squares when putting inthe locks? Some of my sections are a little rectable or triangular shaped.

Truth. What works for you may not work for me and Vice-Versa. Product recommendations are just that "recommendations". Some hair likes Oyin...some likes Carol's Daughter...some...the "No-Name/El Cheapo" stuff from Wally World. YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary) as will all loc journey's - but the fun is in the journey....
To think - when I first came to this site Mamma Dee had to "whip me" for speaking on "healthy perms"...
