how did you get through the "ugly" stage
I hope that didnt offend anyone, but ive seen it referred to as the ugly , puffy, rebellious, teenage stage> I am wondering what kind of styles helped you through the difficult stage where lots of people decided to not loc afterall. I put twist in my hair 2 weeks ago and am looking forward to the journey. I am afraid of the ugly stage and trying to figure out what styles can be done to kind of "disguise" the ugly. Im thinking scarves and updos? i love braid outs on locs but am not sure of that would work in the early stages.
please fill me in on what got you all through that stage, I'd love to see pics too
thanks in advance!

Not looking in mirrors helped me. Also, wearing a scarf. Going freeform really helped, because then I stopped expecting my hair to be 'neat'.
I didn't bother with styles.

I am in the ugly phase now. Let me tell you, a few weeks ago, I was ready to call it quits, so I know how you feel!
Accessorize, my dear! That is the answer. Scarves, bandanas, turbans, head bands, etc. Hair accessories will be your best friend. You can try flat twisting them up to hide the roots also.
Here is a photo of my messy flat twist attempt:

I took this photo yesterday after freshly latching:
So yeah, I'm getting there...June 25th will be my 3 month anniversary.Dance to your own song:

Honnestly, it flew by without me noticing. I woke up one day and it was over
I believe one of my friends used the term "rat's nest" once but it didn't affect me one way or other. I think that mainly, using barrettes for a swept back look was as far as I went, the rest of the time I just let them be.

I think it flew by because I didn't sweat it nor did I constantly look in the mirror and despair over how they looked. I guess it helped that this was my second set so I knew what I was in for.

I was prepared for the ugly stage from my months of research lol so when it came I just let it happen sometime curls would help if I had something that I had to do that required me to look "neat" but otherwise I just let it happen. I know that I'm not ugly so it didn't bother me so much.
Started my locs on August 9, 2013 and still going strong. Follow my blog to track my journey http://naturaltolocs.blogspot.com/.

YOU EMBRACE IT. Your locks are going to go through many stages. You have to be PATIENT.
When I first started, I used to have a lock that would sit up like an antenna, but as they formed and matured, that specific lock started to act right.
Locks are gonna go through an "Ugly" stage, you just got have the patience to deal with that stage.
