    Default Hairballs

This is my second time locking and I'm about 4 months in. I have been noticing a lot of hairballs at the end of my locs and I don't remember having this issue the first time around. What does it mean?

Your hair is starting to bud and the ones hanging down are the detached buds. It's okay to pull them out if they are hanging by a strand or two.

Your hair is forming a matrix inside the lock. As your hair detaches from the root, some will get caught within that matrix. Others will wok through with time/gravity/washing and dangle off the end of your lock as a hair ball. A hair ball is NOT a detached bulb. However, a hairball might become the closed tip of the lock, or it might just dangle until it falls off. Shhh let it be, your hair is locking....Congrats!

Thanks! That makes sense. The budding is happening a lot faster this time around.

Is it normal for someone to have many buds that are barely hanging on?

    Hair balls are NOT buds.
But, yes shed hair can be dangling anywhere at any time.

Hair is constantly in one of three cycles leading to rest, growth and detachment that lasts for each strand from 2-7 years. When time is up, it sheds-this is a continuous process for a lifetime unless the follicle prematurely dies.

Exactly KA...it is NOT a detached bud. I would leave the hair balls be. No need to pull them.

Remember those balls are not buds. It is normal to have many balls that are barely hanging on. Like KA said, they may fall off on their own, or they may become a portion of your loc. I preferred to leave them be, because you don't want to disturb the locing process.
