one way to tell if you have mildew/product build up is by wetting the loc and smelling it. if it smells like that "bad laundry" smell, then run and take that acv baking soda mix and clean your hair! i had this issue and was very self-conscious about my locs

Frizz is not a bad thing. It's a part of the process. Accept it for what it is.

the best way to get flat locs is by free forming. palmrolling/twisting will form the locs into a cylindrical form. i semi freeformed and noticed some flat areas

Never ever think negative thoughts about your hair. Banish them as soon as they threaten to rise. ...

Freeforming does not equal flat locks. Be conscious of how you're laying on them or what you wrap on them. Freeforming does not mean you aren't allowed to touch your hair- if one is going flat just rub it between your fingers. True, the locs won't be perfect 'cylinders', or manicured, but they don't *have* to be flat. I have seen many many many freeform locs, black, caucasian or asian that are GORGEOUS and well-shaped.
My tip: Get information from more than one place because not everyone is properly informed
Also, what happens to one person in x, y, or z situation might not happen to you in the same. People are complicated, your hair is yours only.Last edited by Denny; 09-30-2011 at 04:46 PM.

If you have fine hair (like me), go easy on the twisting gels. I noticed my locs are a lot less oily since I eased up on the products.
