All your hair on your head does not grow at the same rate at once!
for example: I have two rows in the back that are still "shorter" than the rest of my locks! patience is key!

If you are NOT sure of the "size" locks you want, start small. If you change your mind later on, you can make them larger by twisting two or more together. This process is called marriage, and once they are together, the end will have two locks, and some will call them "fork locks" or "twin dragons".

There will be "bad" days, "sad" days. You might be depressed or literally sick! Do NOT take this time to just stare at your locks in a mirror. This is not the time to take out "negative" thoughts on your locks! Your hair has "nothing" to do with that man/parent/child/co-worker/neighbor that is getting on your nerves!

Wear a satin bonnet or a silk scarf to bed @night. Keep your locks covered while you sleep. You can buy one or create your own. I created one using a "half-slip" I no longer wear. I tied a knot in one end and folded/pinned the other part with the elastic until it fits snug on my head. You can also "sew" the other end. (I just tied two knots)

Remember that locs are just as versatile as most other hair. They can be styled, braided, twisted, curled, dyed, cut into a style, extended, etc....all while offering the convenience of instant style and simple maintenance. Enjoy all that you would have them to do!

Smile 2nd set Interlocked Semi Freeformed (unloc'd)

I am on my 3rd set and experienced the same with my second set that was started by interlocking and backcombing (by a loctian) and was 11 months in when I unloc'd because of flatness at the root. I semi free-formed and did not allow them to dry completely when I washed, only palm rolled about 3 times. I unloc'd them at 11 months due to the flatness. I think flat locs are nice, but do not desire them for myself.

My current (3rd set), I started and re-twist once a month; let them completely dry; only use water soluble product in my hair. I am 4 almost 5 months in and loving that they are now shrinking and fuzzy. I prefer not to see my scalp

Ladies, along with the awesome advice in this thread, some people have asked questions. I can't answer them, otherwise I would have.

I have a tip from a friend of mine that I'm taking to heart: In the early stages, the less you do to your hair (when it comes to products, etc.), the better. That might not work for everyone. But I think that it's the approach for me.
