10 Things 'Natural' Women Wish People Would Stop Assuming.
So I encountered an article the other day that seemed to find some assumptions people supposedly make about women with natural hair. I never encountered these assumptions ever in my life, so I basically thought it was a bunch of BS written online. Yet, it seems that others have gone through less bizarre experiences in which people made other assumptions about them due to their hair. If it's not as insane as some listed below in the article (http://madamenoire.com/77809/10-thin...op-assuming/1/) then please do share with Nappturality and how you responded to the person, in question. Any advice to new naturals or anyone in how to handle situations like these?
1. We like neo-soul and jazz
2. We are vegetarians or vegans
3. We are “free” spirits
4. We are political
5. We are hipsters
6. We are fighting the power
7. We are lesbians
8. We are urban
9. We are also into twists, ‘locks and braids
10. It’s just a fad
More information on each number is listed in the article. And as for #6, I fight the power for a living.

Yup you are right...but maybe it's a good thang, I am so tired of loud, cussing girls in hair weaves and teens in kemars with tight jeans. Assumption No# 11, transitioning to natural hair seems to make us more thoughtful.
I will say this, alot of what is talked about in the article are good things...we have to watch when "the man" or the man mentality starts tell us to scoff at good thangs...I feel bad everytime I sit at my booth in public eating McDonalds or drink a Mountain Dew, so sometimes I buy water, or a fruit salad. And we should "represent". Cause I know as an ole school Nation of Islam member, It sickens me EVERYTIME I see a black woman or girl in muslim garb, fightin, cussin, with a cell phone stuck in her head wrap, ordering out the chinese store where pork is cooked in unchanged grease...I wonder whey they are not representing...or the "christians" who love to lie and drink...Last edited by soapinphilly; 10-20-2011 at 11:35 AM.

I wish when it came to how black women wear the natural hair on their head people would just stop assuming. Imagine naturally straight haired textured women going through this silly aggro.

Might I add...
12. If our natural hair is curly, it must be a texturizer.
13. All we use are roots and berries in our hair.
14. We're health nuts.
15. We love yoga.
16. We hate pork.

Well I love neo-soul, eat many vegetarian and vegan meals, like locks/twists/braid and I LOVE yoga. These are all things that I liked before I was even transitioning.
ETA: I did get asked if I was a lesbian (long before I was natural) because wasn't sleeping with my male roommate and I wasn't always in a relationship.
People are going to assume about you based on one thing or another.Last edited by bhop13; 10-21-2011 at 12:49 AM.

yeahhhh BUT, if my hair is curly it must be a texturizer, I USE natural products in my hair, I would LOVE to be healthy, I like yoga and I hate pork.
How great if we COULD live up to some GOOD assumptions.
Does it pay for US to be all buck wild and all over the place? I'd love to be able to look at people and have a reasonable expectation of how they might act...(decided after listening to a 20 something young woman on the subway talk loudly about how she was stalking her baby daddy cause she wanted more of his big thang and how her newborn baby was going to beat up her olde cousin, a brother on the sub sitting next to her, a stranger had to tell her how crazy her convo was)Instigating and waiting for the REVOLUTION to begin!

Hey here is a thought, if I'm going to wear this "crown" I need to act like a queen!
Ya know until this thread it didn't hit me, how great the casual custom of black men calling me "queen" (which happens alot in the mall) It has a meaning, one we all need to pay attention to.Instigating and waiting for the REVOLUTION to begin!

Alot of those assumptions on that list are not bad sterotypes . True we still have our own unique personalities tho.

soap, I actually get what you're saying and in my ideal world naturals WOULD all represent a healthier standard that people would want to emulate. However, for better or worse, being natural is just...being natural...and someday sites like this one won't need to exist because it'll just be seen as another (valid) style choice, rather than something that has to be defended/explained/clarified at every other turn.
Re the assumptions: The only ones I've gotten repeatedly are "free spirit" and "lesbian." Well, I AM a free spirit, and as for the "lesbian" tag, I probably would have gotten that even if my hair were relaxed...Hello, 2021. Glad to see you. Hope you're bringing us goodness and light this year!

^ One day the USA will catch up with the UK where being natural is as unique has having two eyes, one nose, two ears and one mouth
