Ideas for charitable donations
I'd like to start picking a charity/cause a month to send donations. Donations would be in relatively small amounts. I'm posting here to 1) have accountability and 2) to get ideas for causes/organizations, including those that may not be well-known but are doing great work (WITH INTEGRITY).
My areas of interest (particularly in places where the poor and/or people of color can be served) relate to (but not limited to):
--provision of basic necessities (food, clothing, shelter)
--increasing literacy
--education
--development of girls (self-esteem, character development, etc.)
--infant/child health
Thanks in advance.

You can buy a family their own goat - http://sphere.heifer.org/site/c.edJRKQNiFiG/b.204586/
There is another site similar to this where you can gift items that help people be self sufficient/start their own business...the name escapes me right now though. Will come back to this thread after some research.

I recommend looking up folks on CharityNavigator (http://www.charitynavigator.org/) Charity Watch (http://www.charitywatch.org/), GiveWell (http://www.givewell.org/), BBB, etc.
Organizations I like:
1. Samaritan's Purse - provision of basic needs in the U.S. and around the world. You can earmark your giving for whatever locations or projects suit you best. They periodically send newsletters and a prayer calendar to show you what they're doing. My favorite cause is clean water.
http://www.samaritanspurse.org/
2. World Vision - child sponsorship (also see Mission of Mercy, etc.) Choose your country and the child(ren) you want to sponsor for food & education. This also ties into development of girls and infant/child health. Hard to be healthy and learn on 0 meals a day.
http://www.worldvision.org/
3. Your local church or rescue mission - You can see where the $$ is going here, especially if you get out and serve. These folks hand out clothes & food, provide job training & rehab, and just give people in need a place to stay. No point in giving abroad and passing up the brother in need next door.
4. Stella's House - I have seen this pastor and the girls in person. Their goal is to save orphans in Moldova from sex trafficking. At 15 these girls get put out of the orphanage onto the street w/ a bus ticket back "home". Usually they're offered a "job" that sounds/looks good until they're bought & sold. This guy will annoy you with mail, but taking over a state-run orphanage and supporting 4 Stella's Houses is a pretty huge undertaking. http://www.stellasvoice.org/about/stellas-house/
Please let me know if you have any questions. I always thought I'd wait until I made X amount to give to charity... but God said, "Why not start with $10?" so I did. Little is much when God is in it.
