Brooklyn Alabama to Harlem Project
My family has been researching our geneology for many years. I am a second generation New Yorker on my mother's side but my father came up from Alabama in the 50s. There was a huge migration from the turn of century of blacks moving north to escape the oppression of the south. That part of history is never taught in school.
My grandparents, father, aunts and uncles never wanted to talk about why they left the south to come north. The reasons died with them. My mom said that she went south once as a child, saw the Jim Crow signs and how black people were treated and never went back until recently. She made a decision not to take her children south. Its interesting though that all of my siblings are now moving there.
My cousin is creating a documentary called Brooklyn Alabama to Harlem in which she traces our family back to the south and tries to retrace the steps that led us here. Her great grandmother is my grandmother and the women in the trailer are my grandma, great aunt, sister and aunt. Take a look and watch as the story unfolds.

My dad is from Gasden Alabama, and my oldest slave ancestor on his side I found out was named Mariah Dark. Happy Mother's Day to Mariah Dark!

My mom's side of the family came from South Carolina to NYC via Philadelphia. My husband's parents are both from Alabama and went to Connecticut during WWII to work in a factory. My dad's people are from Virginia.
