Why would taking your locs out in the fall/winter affect your health?

Well, when/if I take out my locs I'll be doing the big chop. She said that she knew someone who uct her locs off in the winter and got pnemonia. Now I don't know if she would have gotten sick anyway but she explained that after having all the hair on her head for years the sudden exposure to cold made her sick. Again don't know if this is true but it kind of made sense to me... I guess. What do you guys think?

I'd say it was a coincidence. I understand being sensitive to exposure to the cold, but there are ways around that (hats, warmth of an afro, wig, etc).
When my hair was permed, I'd delay touchups in the winter because of the extra warmth the newgrowth gave me, but a Cold/Pneumonia? No, not unless your immune system is already comprimised. My Blog: http://locability.blogspot.com

I had my 2nd BC in the winter a few years ago and I was as healthy as could be. If anything my head felt a little cold, but that was about it. It's interesting how some people will make an unusual correlation between certain things based on their observation of another individual, and believe that their results are conclusive. It's possible that the lady with pneumonia could have been sick long before she had her BC. Colds are gradual and need time to incubate, so they don't happen instantly, especially based on a hair cut.

There are many people who believe going outside with a wet head causes colds and such. That is a myth. Maybe the hairdresser was relating cutting off the locks to this myth.

^^^Yep. I did my 3rd BC around this time last year and I didn't get more than the occasional sniffles (I have year round allergies, but i definitely tell the difference between that and a cold/the flu). If you're still worried stock up on hats and you should be fine.

Thanks ladies. I still think I'll cut it gradually to see how I feel but if I'm comfortable with the change these bad boys may be gone by year's end. Interesting a lot of you have done this a few times. I've only done teh BC once.

Never had the serious urge or idea to cut my locs, not even on my most annoyed hair day. These are with me for life barring any medical issue. When they just irritate my by touch and are getting in the way i put em up in bantu knots until the crazy passes. Two birds one stone they are out of the way and BAM i have cute curls when im done.
